Celebrating Chinese New Year at SM South Metro Malls

MANILA, Philippines - SM’s South Metro Malls welcomed the Year of the Horse with traditional Chinese performances, arts and crafts, and of course, the much-awaited lion and dragon dance.

At SM Southmall, the centerpiece was a 10-ft. Golden Horse made in fiberglass resin surrounded by an exhibit of 212 artworks by Chan Lim, a family of artists and students at the mall’s Food Street.

Chan Lim and his brothers learned from Taiwanese masters since they were just kids, as prodded by their father, Jose, who is into Western style painting but who also dabbles in Chinese painting.

Chinese painting has evolved from the traditional ink with detailed strokes to something colorful and bolder approach. This is the result of blending western techniques into Chinese painting. Their first exhibit in the south metro area featured Chinese paintings in fans and paper.

The Hoc Kian Chinese Opera Group also performed well-loved Chinese selections as well as the traditional Chinese fan dance during the event. The Kim Hwa Music Ensemble, on the other hand, played traditional, modern and classical Chinese music.

SM BF Parañaque, on the other hand, featured the traditional lion and dragon dance by the Philippine Ling Nam Athletic Federation, which also showcased different kinds of wushu and kung fu routines.
