10 things you don’t know about MYMP
MANILA, Philippines - 1.) MYMP stands for “Make Your Momma Proud.†It is a tribute to Chin Alcantara’s mom who died of breast cancer. She saw him start with the guitar but never got to see him play professionally.
2.) Chin is not only the guitarist, arranger, band leader and male vocalist of MYMP but also the founder and trademark owner. He started the band as an all-male rock band which was proclaimed the 1996 San Miguel Beer National Battle of the Band champion with Chin as NCR’s Best Guitarist.
3.) MYMP is popular as a singing duo but it seldom performs without the back-up band composed of a drummer/percussionist, a bass player and a keyboardist.
4) MYMP’s original female singer is not Juris Fernandez but Nina who sang with the band for a year. MYMP also became the back-up band of Brix Ferraris (South Border’s original singer).
5) MYMP doesn’t just do covers. It has a lot of original songs and became popular because of A Little Bit and Get Me.
6) MYMP never disbanded. Just because the band is not visible on television doesn’t mean it has disbanded.
Fact is, MYMP is still one of the most active and busiest bands in the live music scene.
7) Because of its experiences in different bands and genres, MYMP isn’t only limited to ballads and love songs. Although it became popular because of its acoustic style, the band can also rock out and play pop and upbeat songs as well.
8) MYMP has broken down the language and communication barriers through music as it has pure Indonesian, Malaysian and Korean supporters. Although MYMP has already had two US tours and a number of shows in Asia, its Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia shows were significant since they were purely for a non-Filipino audience.
9) MYMP is celebrating its 10th anniversary in the music business and in line with this, it is releasing a new album titled Electrified which will be launched on Feb. 15 , 4 p.m.at the Lucky Chinatown Mall Atrium, Binondo.The grand album launch will be on Feb. 16, 7 p.m. at the Eastwood Central Plaza, Libis.
10) MYMP’s new vocalist is Jana Laraza. She sang in the 10th-anniversary album under PolyEast EMI-Galaxy Records.
