Young kitchen heartthrob

MANILA, Philippines - Cooking was not the first love of Chef Anton Amoncio (photo). As a kid though, he would spend countless hours watching his grandmother cook while he played with his toys. He would also sometimes find himself inside the kitchen of the restaurants that his family frequented and stayed there until a staff member would ask him to leave. At an early age, he already enjoyed playing around different dishes. He learned and perfected his own version of bagoong rice at the age of eight.

However, the interest in food took a backseat as years went on. Chef Anton’s attention shifted to singing, which he pursued in college. However, he came to a decision that changed his life and career. He realized that he could practice his passion for cooking without having to turn away from his love of music. After all, he could still be singing his heart out, while mastering the art of food. Only this time, the kitchen was his stage while his creations served as his audience.

Chef Anton feels that it was the best decision he has made so far. Honing his skills in the culinary arts has given him even more exposure than it did when he was into music.

He earned his seniors’ respect and trust. Even though he wasn’t at the top of his class at a culinary school, he was often the person selected to represent cooking demo in various places. Along with them came different products that made him brand ambassador. Opportunities opened up for him including TV appearances and magazine interviews.

Now, he has decided to open his own restaurant named Antojos Restaurante. He toyed with the idea of fusion. After all, he loves playing around with dishes ever since he was a kid. He thought of giving each dish a twist to cater to the palate of the new generation without sacrificing the traditional taste of the food.

Antojos Restaurante located at No. 3 Gen. de Jesus St., Little Baguio, San Juan City (at the back of Xavier School) will have its grand opening on Jan. 25 with a mini-show topbilled by Luke Mejares, Michael Pangilinan, Prima Diva Billy, Le Chazz and AJ Tamiza, and Rufa Mae Quinto. Richard Pinlac will host.
