Summer Sol-stice (Sexy Talk with Maryo J. delos Reyes’ bet for stardom)

Next month (Sept. 11 to 17), all SM Theaters nationwide will show only the films of the 12 directors tapped by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) to participate in the Sining Pambansa Masters Showcase, each of whom was given a P1.5M subsidy and the freedom to choose the subject. Not enough budget? Well, they have to shell out their own money for the expense beyond that.

The 12 are (at random now): Peque Gallaga, Chito Roño, Joel Lamangan, Mel Chionglo, Gil Portes, Tikoy Aguiluz, Joey Javier Reyes, Romy Suzara, Elwood Perez and Maryo J. delos Reyes. Two, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna and Jun Urbano, backed out. The last unfinished film of Celso Ad. Castillo is an honorary entry. The 12 will be honored at a Recognition Night on Sept. 7, five days before the Showcase formally opens. It’s non-competition but an Audience’s Choice Award will be handed out.

Maryo’s entry is Bamboo Flowers, a trilogy about the lives of various characters in Bohol, his home province. Starring in the third episode is newcomer Orlando Sol, member of Maryo’s all-male singing group Masculados, who’s his bet for stardom.

“He has the makings of a versatile actor,” said Maryo of Orlando whom he discovered at a Chow King outlet where Orlando was working as a waiter and cast in Senakulo after making him undergo an acting workshop.

Orlando has done a few indie films, TV dramas (the last was an episode in GMA’s Magpakailanman, titled Prosti, with Daria Ramirez and Tessie Tomas as aging honky-tonk moviehouse prostitutes).

“Orlando is a dedicated actor,” added Maryo. “He has no qualms about doing bold scenes; wala siyang hang-ups.”

What is sexy to you?

“It’s how a woman carries herself, ‘yung kabuuhan niya.”

When do you feel sexy?

“When I stand naked in front of the mirror, hehehehe!”

What part of your body do you consider sexiest?

“My eyes. Sabi nila, mapaglaro daw ang mga mata ko.”

What part of a woman’s body do you find sexiest?

“The legs and the butt.”

When did you lose your innocence?

“It was rather late…when I was 18.”

“Ka-edad ko. Then after that, naging kami. The sad part is that she left for Japan soon after. I’ve never seen her since then.”

“I’m not a book reader; I read only magazines like FHM. May collection ako n’yan. My favorite section is Ladies’ Confession.”

“Mortal Sin (with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie).”

“Saxophone. The sound turns me on.”

“Jumbo Hotdog and Di Ko Mapigil, both Masculados songs. And also, Cam to Cam, song din ng grupo namin, which is about a man and a woman having a cyber chat.”

“Banana, ‘yung Lakatan.”

“Lights on siempre so my partner and I can see what we are doing, hehehehe!”

“Kitchen, kasi I’m a good cook. I love to experiment with recipes.”

“The nude bed scene between Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie in Mortal Sin. Ang ganda ng pagkakagawa! Hindi bastos.”

“In Halik sa Tubig, the first of my three indie films, with Althea Vega and Marco Morales. Threesome kami. Hindi ko kaya ang total nudity so I covered myself with a plaster.”
