The genius folks of the movie world

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - They come up with the brightest ideas; their minds are extraordinary and yet they look like ordinary people. Genius folks are really cool; even in movies, they are undeniably amazing. They could be weird most of the time but, hey, we all have that in us. So here they are — some from old films and others are from recent ones.

Professor Klump (Nutty Professor). He is a genius and a good-hearted man. He never fails to amuse his students and colleagues by his inventions. However, people would often make fun of him because of his enormous size. This affected his self-esteem so much that he would rather stay inside his laboratory than go out. What he couldn’t understand is that inner beauty is more important.

Raymond Babbitt (Rain Man). Ray is an autistic with a special talent in counting and recalling things. His long lost brother appears to him with the purpose of getting his share of inheritance from their father. As a cover for his true intention, he wants custody of Ray. However, the plan changes when he learns to truly care for Ray.

Tony Stark (Iron Man). A billionaire with brains, Tony Stark created a powered suit to help him escape from his captors. The same suit would later be used to save other lives as well. To make it even better, he added some cool functions to use against his enemies.

Q (James Bond). One thing that amazes people when watching Bond films is the gadgets and weapons that he uses. Who made them? Q and his team. Being the head of research and development, Q always comes up with stuff that fascinates Bond and the viewers. It’s just funny to see how Bond would play with the gadgets and end up destroying them — this annoys Q of course.

Benjamin Franklin Gates (National Treasure). If there’s anybody who has the patience, intelligence, resourcefulness and background for treasure hunting, then that would be none other than Ben Gates. He is a historian who truly values historical treasures — not for personal gain but to protect them from falling into the wrong hands.

Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown (Back to the Future). He could be one of the oldest geniuses in this list but definitely should be acknowledged. For the new generations who don’t know, Doc is the inventor of the time machine that helped Marty McFly to fix his personal problems and some of Doc’s. This movie is truly a classic favorite.

Jamal Wallace (Finding Forrester). A good athlete with intelligence — that is how one can describe Jamal. Although struggling from racial discrimination, Jamal continues to live up his dream. He pursues his ambition of becoming a writer through the help of William Forrester, who is a writer himself.

John Nash (A Beautiful Mind). Based on a true story, A Beautiful Mind is about Math wizard John Nash. He sees things differently, he thinks beyond ordinary. People would think he’s odd but actually he has the talent only a few could have. Is it a gift or a burden?

Lex Luthor (Superman). It is not new to anyone that Lex Luthor is the No. 1 enemy of Superman. Now, it is such a wonder how an ordinary human, with no power, can be Superman’s enemy. Surprisingly, Lex has quite an impressive intelligence. Too bad, he uses his gift for his own purpose only.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Silence of The Lamb). One important thing to remember about Dr. Lecter is that don’t let him get into your mind (this was an advice given to Clarice Starling, an FBI agent). He has a way to manipulate someone with his words. What a gift! It’s just sad that he uses it for the bad.
