Larawan circa ’69

REMEMBER WHEN? - Danny Dolor - The Philippine Star

The cast of the stage play Larawan posed for a publicity photo with the ruins of Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila as backdrop. Based on the Nick Joaquin classic, Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, Larawan was mounted at the Raha Sulayman Theater, occupying a prominent place in Fort Santiago.

Larawan tells the sad plight of two spinster sisters, Candida and Paula, holding on the vanishing values of old Manila, signified by the painting of their father, Don Lorenzo Marasigan, who is not shown in the play.

Playing the two sisters are, in front, Rita Gomez (Candida) and Lolita Rodriguez (Paula). Leopoldo Salcedo (Manolo) and Veronica Palileo (Pepang).

Lino Brocka directed the play, later restaged at the Metropolitan Theater, with Lolita as Candida, Charito Solis as Paula and Phillip Salvador as Tony. — RKC
