National Artist Eddie Romero, 88

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - National Artist for Cinema and Broadcast Arts Eddie Romero has died at the age of 88.

A screenwriter, film director and producer, Romero is described as the quintessential Filipino filmmaker whose life is devoted to the art and commerce of cinema spanning three generations of filmmakers.

His film credits include "Ganito Kami Noon…Paano Kayo Ngayon?", "Aguila", "Kamakalawa" and the political film "Banta ng Kahapon."

His 13-part series of "Noli Me Tangere" brought Rizal's novel to a new generation of viewers.

His concepts, as stated in his National Artist citation, "are delivered in an utterly simple style – minimalist, but never empty, always calculated, precise and functional, but never predictable."
