Leopoldo Salcedo as Juan Tamad

REMEMBER WHEN? - The Philippine Star

The mythical character Juan Tamad is identified with Manuel Conde, National Artist (in waiting) for cinema. But in 1962, Leopoldo Salcedo played the part in Juan Tamad Enters Malacañang.

As in Conde’s Juan Tamad, the Salcedo version spoofs politicians and high-society members. Leading lady is his wife Merle Tuazon, with Pugak and Tugak providing the laughs.

In the 1991 Metro Manila Film Festival, Eric Quizon played Juan — and got a Best Actor trophy for it. Conde’s son, Jun Urbano, directed the movie — and also appeared in it as Mr. Shooli, the “Mongolian” man most identified with him.   —RKC
