Good Time with Owl City & Carly Rae

SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil - The Philippine Star

Theirs is quite a team-up. YouTube discovery and now the year’s biggest pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen meets up with Adam Young, the electro-pop creator of dreamy sounds who calls himself Owl City. She was the Canadian girl behind the monster pop ditty Call Me Maybe while he has written and performed atmospheric songs like the also sensational Fireflies and Strawberry Avalanche. It looks like they should not be together but they both love dance music and so they paired up and out came the current big seller Good Time.

The song is a Top 10 hit and is expected to soar even higher. It is the third song to come out of Owl City’s latest album The Midsummer Station. Released earlier were Shooting Star and Dementia featuring Mike Hoppus. Those who remember Owl City from a few years ago are doubtless surprised that he is part of this infectious ditty. Young was introduced as a loner who created his music on his computer in the basement of his parents’ home in Owatonna, Minnesota. He posted his work on MySpace and that was the birth of the CD Ocean Eyes with the phenomenal single Fireflies.

Young made progress by forming a band, also called Owl City, and working with various collaborators for his next effort, All Things Bright And Beautiful. The songs in the CD had typical Owl City titles like Deer In The Headlights, Dreams Don’t Turn To Dust, Honey And The Bee and Alligator Sky. But while he had retained the sweet innocence in his songwriting, the music was changing. He was getting into dance and electronica. It was still dreamy and graceful but now comes with a beat. No wonder it seems to have taken him only a small step to get into Good Time with Jepsen.

Call Me Maybe singer Carly Rae Jepsen

On the other hand, Jepsen was this singer-songwriter who was a Canadian Idol finalist some years ago and whom nobody had really heard of. That was until fellow Canadian Justin Bieber tweeted about the girl and her infectious song on YouTube. This got Bieber fans interested and listening to Call Me Maybe. With that huge number of Bieberites giving the boost, even the whole world was soon singing, “Hey, I just met you/ and this is crazy/ but here’s my number/ so call me maybe/ it’s hard to look right at you baby/ but here’s my number/ so call me maybe…”

Move over, Katy Perry and others because the song easily swept away the competition to become the biggest hit of the summer. Someday when somebody asks you what were you listening to in 2012, I am sure you will say, Call Me Maybe.

Good Time is Jepsen’s follow-up song to Call Me Maybe. It is that crucial sophomore single that music industry insiders believe can turn a sensational artist into a one-hit wonder. Thanks to this second success, Jepsen is over that hump. In fact, her first album titled Kiss and containing Call Me Maybe and Good Time, plus of possible third single, is due to hit the stores soon. And would you believe that Bieber has totally taken newcomer Jepsen under his wing? She is not only the opening act in his current US tour, she is also set to guest in a very special cut in his next album.

It is very obvious that things are now all going very well for Jepsen and vice-versa, also for Owl City. Good Time is taking The Midsummer Station to new heights. Young can certainly use some exposure with the dance crowd and he is getting a lot of this through Jepsen. Those of you out there who want to listen to Good Time will now also get the chance to enjoy Owl City’s music. And it is very good. It is obvious that Young is not resting on the success of Fireflies but also learning and experimenting to make better music. His fans need not worry about his association with Jepsen. As can be deduced from the titles, Young is his old dreamy self but he is now also having lots of fun.

Also included are Dreams And Disasters, Gold, I’m Coming After You, Speed Of Love, Embers, Silhouette, Metropolis and Take It All Away.
