The return of The World Famous Platters

MANILA, Philippines - After three standing ovations at the Marina Bay Sands’ Grand Theater in Singapore and the Aliw Theater in Manila early this year, it was obvious that The World Famous Platters had to return to Asia to give a chance to the countless followers who missed their first tour early this year.

Unlike the first tour that was so short, they will have a little more time to visit other cities in Asia including Philippine cities like Cebu, Iloilo and Bacolod to do some sightseeing. This is something they’ve always wanted to do ever since their first visit to Manila that lasted for a few hours last year when they were the featured performers on a luxury cruise ship on a world tour.

On their second visit early this year, the schedule was so hectic they almost missed their flight to Singapore when they did some last-minute shopping on the way to the airport.

The World Famous Platters are mainstay artists at Branson Missouri (dubbed the Las Vegas of the East minus the gaming) 10 months every year and have been performing there for two decades. Branson has over 40 theaters featuring at least 70 artists each year. The World Famous Platters are one of the main attractions together with Andy Williams, Wayne Newton, Tony Orlando, Acrobats from China, Broadway musicals, etc. For a little city with a population of only 2,000, Branson is visited by a whopping eight million tourists yearly.    

Because The World Famous Platters could never leave throughout their yearly Branson run, they grab every opportunity to perform elsewhere during their short breaks even if it means spending one whole day on the plane traveling. It takes at least a total of 29 hours including stopovers to travel from Branson to Manila and they don’t mind. They have fallen in love with the Philippines and would always love to return.

The Platters were formed in 1953 and have churned out at least 66 chart-topping songs and have sold over a hundred million albums worldwide. All original Platters have gone to Rock & Roll heaven (the last original Platter Herb Reed passed away June of this year) but the legacy lives on with The World Famous Platters. They’ve entertained Platters fans around the world with their impeccable performances.

Their main advantage over the other groups is lead singer Eddie Stovall Sr. also known as the emperor of soul together with Lawrence “Rooster” Lockard, who actually performed, worked and toured with The Platters original lead vocalist Tony Williams and only female member Zola Taylor.

The normal length of The World Famous Platters show in Branson is over two hours but has been trimmed down to 90 minutes for the Edsa Shangri-La Manila dinner concert on Aug. 27 so that every song to be performed is known to the Filipino fans. Platters lovers will reminisce and sing along to worldwide million sellers like Only You, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Twilight Time, The Great Pretender, Remember When, My Prayer, The Magic Touch, I’m Sorry, Harbor Lights and many more.
