PULP features August Burns Red this month

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - With barely three weeks left until international heavy metal heavyweights Lamb of God and The Black Dahlia Murder deliver musical power and aggression, PULP Magazine offers the best deals in town for its legion of followers and faithful head-bangers. Tickets are still available at a special early-bird price for only P3,150 and P1,250 (for VIP and General Admission, respectively, only until Feb. 17), but the offer for the ultimate experience via the PULP royalty pass is still on. For only P8,500, lucky fans will be entitled to a VIP show pass, access to soundcheck, access to cocktails and open-bar during sound check, a free Lamb of God tour T-shirt, access to the meet and greet after the show, permission to have one item signed by the band, a photo with the band plus a free issue of PULP’s December 2011 issue with Lamb of God on the cover. Also, be sure to check out the opening performances from Australia’s Ennui Breathes Malice and local metal newbie Oblivion.

PULP’s February 2012 issue is also now available at all stands nationwide and keeps up the tradition of celebrating both the best in live and the loud as August Burns Red (ABR) takes the honors as this month’s cover band. Hailing from Manheim, Pennsylvania and fronted by Jake Lurhs, the band is currently on the forefront of a growing metal-core scene in the US, and lauded for being one of the most innovative and technically advanced groups of the millennium.

PULP editor-in-chief Joey Dizon is lucky to get an exclusive Q&A with Lurhs, who gamely shares the stories behind the making of the band’s latest disc Leveler, and how a band made up of “followers of Christ” doesn’t necessarily make its members crazy about the whole “Christian rock” label. Subsequently, ABR is also one of the six international headliners to perform at this year’s PULP Summer Slam 12, happening on April 28 at the QC Amoranto Stadium, alongside Archenemy, Darkest Hour, We Came as Romans, Bless The Fall and Periphery. Lucky Filipinos will get to watch all six (alongside six of the best local bands) for only P400 with all the usual freebies from Pizza Hut, Pepsi, Colt45, Smart Load plus a discount of Tribal’s official Summer Slam tee.

Meanwhile, just what is it about hard rock and heavy metal that has even the most corporate and formal of peeps falling under its spell? PULP staff writer Karen Sy interviews personalities like Victoria Court managing director Atticus King, business consultant Jay Estaris and Draven marketing manager Bong Borbe about their life-long commitment to both the music and their day jobs, and how they’ve been able to successfully maintain a good record in both.

Meanwhile, local alternative trio Reklamo is ready for round two as it releases its second outing Best Served Cold, while MCA Universal unleashes its female wunderkind Marie Digby, who is ready to conquer local shores with her enchanting melodies and even more hypnotic looks. Plus, don’t forget to check if the lens caught you in the moshpit last year as PULP also brings the exclusive coverage to Parkway Drive Live in Manila this month. Music fans will definitely have more than the usual amount of features and reviews to dig into, especially as the new year and PULP already have a lot in store for music fans across the nation.

PULP Magazine is available for P150 only at leading magazine shops and bookstores nationwide.
