NatGeo bags seven Emmys

MANILA, Philippines - National Geographic Channel took home seven Emmy Awards, the most Emmy wins of any cable network, at the 32nd annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards in New York City. This Emmy win is NGC’s biggest haul in its 10-year history.

The News & Documentary Emmy Awards are presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for excellence in national news and documentary programming. The Emmy Award is considered the television equivalent of the Academy Awards.

Restrepo: Afghan Outpost, which chronicled the deployment of US troops stationed at one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan, took awards for continuing coverage of a news story (long form) and editing.

Great Migrations, an epic natural history series which tells the powerful stories of many of the planet’s species and their epic journeys to ensure survival of the species, took the honors for cinematography of a nature program and for music and sound.

Witness: Katrina, which reconstructed the storm and its aftermath entirely through the eyes of those who experienced it, was honored for outstanding historical programming (long form).

Explorer Series’ Lost Mummies of New Guinea, an expedition to solve the mysteries of a remarkable form of body preservation, was honored for cinematography of a news and documentary program.

Explorer: Can the Gulf Survive, which hunted for the truth of what happened with the crude oil that blew out the Deepwater Horizon wellhead with exclusive access to BP’s operations, took the honor for outstanding research.
