Isay Alvarez goes big band

MANILA, Philippines - Isay Alvarez brings back the nostalgia and romance of the big band era when she performs with musical arranger Mel Villena and the AMP Big Band in two special shows at the Teatrino (Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Center) on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1.

Dubbed Isay Alvarez-Seña Swings Out With The AMP Big Band, the concert series recalls the glory days of the grand dames of jazz such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and the swinging jazz ensembles pioneered by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

It’s a dream come true for the veteran stage performer and mainstream actress, who pays tribute to her singing idols such as Sylvia La Torre, Katy dela Cruz, Armida Siguion-Reyna and other local jazz greats.

Prior to her foray in theater and her ensuing pivotal stint in Miss Saigon, Isay started her career as a lounge singer. It was during her early stints at the Hyatt’s Calesa Bar and the music lounges of the Manila Hotel and Manila Garden Hotel where she honed her vocal chops under the tutelage of jazz greats such as Eli Saison and Tony Velarde.

In her own way, Isay shares the spotlight with long-time musical colleague Mel — a veteran arranger who has toured, recorded and performed with the country’s top singers. An alumnus of the UP College of Music, Mel is well-versed with the intricacies of jazz, swing, big band and even jazz fusion.

The AMP Big Band represents the fruition of Mel’s desire to perpetuate the jazz tradition. Comprised of equally talented and seasoned instrumentalists, the orchestra has been spearheading free jazz education seminars and open jams to aspiring players, usually held at Skarlett Jazz Kitchen.

It was Isay’s husband, Robert Seña, who conceptualized the show as a welcome break from her hectic acting sked, and a timely opportunity to rekindle her passion for singing.
