Fil-American cast in film about Bataan
Katharine Ross, before she did the classic The Graduate, starred in The Longest Hundred Miles in 1957, along with two other American actors, Ricardo Montalban and Doug McClure. Shot on location in the Philippines, the movie tells of ‘the daring escape from the hell that was Bataan…and a hundred-mile dash to freedom.’
The Filipino cast included Ronald Remy, Vic Silayan, Helen Thompson, Vic Diaz — and Vilma Santos. Then a child star, Vilma was billed below the title, in very small letters yet.
Ms. Ross merited an Oscar nomination, Best Supporting Actress, for The Graduate. Her co-stars, Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft, were also nominated by the Oscar for lead roles. — RKC
