Edu adds new flavor to Family Feud

JP Mitog - The Philippine Star

Manila, Philippines - Family Feud, a game show popular the world over, has been around for over three decades now. Filipino families get to enjoy the revamped local version with Family Feud: The Showdown Edition which started airing this month on GMA 7.

Posing questions such as, “things you’d buy if you won the lotto,” “things you wouldn’t lend out to anyone,” and “the marrying age for a woman,” this edition of Family Feud includes easy, relatable and fun questions that don’t require a rocket scientist to answer.

Host Edu Manzano definitely adds a different flavor to the show, backed up by his varied and rich history in hosting combined with his tongue-in-cheek humor. He is engaging and interacts with the audience and families, making the game-playing experience for the contestants comfy and providing them the opportunity to let loose and put their gamiest game face on.

Because the contestants show that they are having so much fun, viewers at home can’t help but stay glued to their screens on weekday mornings, partially hoping to make it onto this widely loved, entertaining show.

Contestants from the opposing families usually press the buzzer so fast at the face-off starting each round, that sometimes Edu jokes that he hasn’t even finished the question yet. It’s a good thing the contestants end up being good guessers, giving their family the opportunity to choose Pass or Play, a feature included in previous Family Feud editions. It’s entertaining to see the two families battle to get the correct answer and amusing to see them miss an answer because they get flustered in the excitement of the moment. It’s during these times that the opposing family has a chance to steal, an advantage that’s especially crucial when families are playing for double and even triple points rounds.

Families also get the chance to win more money because of features such as Top Sikat, where the family earns an additional cash prize if they answer the top answer for that round (regardless if they win the round or not). Edu injects a certain kilig factor as well when he advises families that they have an “isang ligaw” Sweepheart moment coming up. This is when a family can win additional money when they have given all the top answers for a particular survey question.

The goal of each family is to reach 300 points and be the first to make it to the Fast Money or Jackpot Round. If this goal isn’t accomplished before the Fast Money round, an additional Sudden Death segment has the two team captains from each family square off to provide the top answer to a survey question. Here, like in all the survey questions, presence of mind and common sense play a key role in ensuring one family’s victory over the other.

Unlike previous Philippine editions of Family Feud, Family Feud: The Showdown Edition on GMA 7 offers viewers and contestants alike an edgier, more youthful feel with an updated logo and brighter visuals and set design. Edu ends each episode with a witty remark or retort, a take-away joke that viewers can surely pass on through text or share at the next family gathering.

Viewers also get a glimpse of what GMA 7 stars think of the survey questions through short videos at the end of some rounds, allowing the Filipino family even more access into the minds of their favorite Kapuso stars.

Family Feud: The Showdown Edition is surely a show that Filipino families must include in their weekday-morning TV viewing. It promotes family bonding, healthy sportsmanship and fun opportunities to see how alike or different your family views even the most mundane of questions — like top areas where kalyo grows, or things that people look for after eating spicy food.

Catch the winning streaks, multiple points, steals, and plays of Family Feud: The Showdown Edition every weekday morning right after Starbox on GMA 7.
