Mel & Joey features dangerous plants and animals

-

MANILA, Philippines - To augment the economic situation of the country some species of plants and animals from foreign lands were taken in and cultivated. Tonight on GMA 7’s Mel & Joey, these and other interesting topics will be featured.

When before these alien things were effective they are termed dangerous now a days. The suckermouth fish or janitor fish from South Africa believed to help keep the Laguna de Bay, Marikina and Pasig Rivers clean and passable had to be fished out as they block the waterways. The fibrous stems of Water Hyacinth, also from South America serve as good handicraft materials but later on, the plant became good breeding places for mosquitoes and deprive the fish of the sun rays.

Gourmets might find the golden apple snail or golden kuhol from Argentina and Brazil nutritious but it has to be exterminated when our farmers discovered it has reduced their ricefields’ harvest from 10 percent to 100 percent depending on the level of infestation.
