Another jam-packed issue from PULP

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Only a few weeks away until the momentous, annual rock mecca that is PULP Summer Slam happens, and music fans and rabid rock fans will once again find themselves surrounded by a sea of like-minded individuals in the tens of thousands as this year’s festivities, dubbed Colt 45 Presents: PULP Summer Slam 11: Resurrection, features not one, not two but three international heavy metal legends, Hellyeah, Death Angel and Anthrax, as they slug it out with more than 20 of the country’s biggest and best bands such as Kamikazee, Chicosci, Urbandub, Moonstar 88, Franco, Arcadia, April Morning Skies, Imago, Razorback, Paramita and many more.

Which is why PULP Magazine brings you a jam-packed issue for this month, as it celebrates yet another year in local rock music, with Pinoy heavy metal prodigies Wolfgang, back from a long hiatus but leading the touring pack of Tanduay Rhum’s First Five. Contributor Adrian Arcega supplied the band with the much-awaited, long-overdue questions (which they gamely acknowledged and answered) in this giant main feature.

Also in this issue is Lip Service, a Filipino rock group that fuses indie, Brit-rock, new wave and dance punk in one catchy and upbeat package. Music editor Jason Caballa brings us the story of these four young musicians who definitely have paid their dues in the local rock scene to get to where they are. Meanwhile, newbie bands Talata and All for Patricia are also getting their head start in PULP’s Homegrown section, where all young bands start out on their way to stardom, and Dubai’s premier heavy metal act Nervecell is also put in the spotlight, being among the performers at this year’s “Slam” and making their way to the ears of Filipino extreme metal fans. Speaking of music festivals, Jason Caballa gives us a lowdown on the various rock and pop festivals all over the world namely Sonisphere, Coachella, Glastonbury, and Download Festival and gets first-hand information from Filipino friends who have experienced these events and how they compare them to our very own Pulp Summer Slam

No less than PULP editor-in-chief Joey Dizon prepares readers for one of the biggest shows in Manila this year, Mr. Big Live in Manila, which will take place at Araneta Coliseum on May 10. Here, Joey shares his first encounter with the glam rock band, and shares his personal journey through life with Mr. big as a soundtrack in the background. Without a doubt, many of Dizon’s contemporaries, as well as the younger fan base of this band, are stoked that the hitmaking, rock supergroup is back in action, while Dizon makes the experience educational by counting off and giving short reviews of each of Mr. Big’s albums in its rich discography. Dizon also brings musicians much-needed information on how and where to get started in recording their music, with the feature Good Sound on the Cheap written and researched to be able to get the entire new slew of bands on the right path.

All that and more, plus the latest and most informative music reviews, event coverage and mini-features and columns about music that no other publication can deliver.
