Who is Hay Jude?

ME, STARZAN - Joey de Leon -

Last April 3, my wife Eileen showed me the tweet exchange between my two sons, Jio and Jako. Jio is currently in New York studying film at NYU.

@jiodeleon Filipino-American chick went into my room and asked if I was Filipino. Said yes. Asked if I was from Cali. Said no, was from Manila.

@jiodeleon Then she said “Wow then your parents back home must be loaded.” Lol. Fil-Am people. So judgmental. :))

@jakoraphaelle @jiodeleon well, it makes sense. unless were tnt-ing :)) cute ba?

@jiodeleon @jakoraphaelle Eh. :)) Ok lang. Typical Fil-Am. Hahaha. Filipinos. So judgmental. :))

And speaking of “five,” here are five more of those five-line poems we call limericks. In the earlier times in England and Ireland, limericks were often used in parlor games and drinking parties. Verses in limerick form were sometimes combined with a refrain to form a limerick song. And yes, they also performed limericks in funeral vigils and wakes. That is why I have finally found the Tagalog translation of limerick — it’s LAMAY-RICK!

May poging-poging kapit-bahay kaming si Peping —

Mister ni Aling Felicing na may utang kay Singh,

Nang maghuhulog na si Felicing sa Bumbay,

Muntik nang mahulog sa nakitang bumigay —

Ahahahay! Si Peping at si Singh magkasiping!

There was a girl who used to be called Juana,

Then she changed it to Tuna, now it’s Trina,

‘Di ko na natiis

So I asked her, “Why Miss?”

“Misis,” she said, “at anak ko ay three na.”

(Ngek! Nung second child hindi man lang ginawang Chona.)

Nag- drug mule ang seksing si Mottie,

Front and back s’ya na’y nag-impake,

Nang nasa eroplano

Na-high ang pasahero,

Kumain kasi ng kamote.

Nene still makes weewee in her blanket,

“You’re twenty na,” said Mommy na galit,

But no more problema,

Her jingling na-solve na,

Si Nene meme na lang sa toilet.

“Hay Jude” ang tanda n’yang name ng tatay n’ya,

Michelle’s mom left Dad kasi nung babe pa s’ya,

“Let it be na lang at set-bwi,”

‘Yan ang say ni Mother Mary,

Hay Jude is short for “Hayop kang Hudas ka!”

Hayyy naku ... here’s a song dedicated to all the Hay Judes out there. My apologies to the Beatles.  Siempre to the tune of Hey Jude.

Hay Jude, don’t be so bad

‘Wag babad tsong dun sa ‘yong others

Remember sa bahay mo’y may sweetheart

So ‘wag mag-park dun sa mas bata.

Hay Jude, please be afraid

Na ma-raid ka o mahuli ni Mama

The minute ikaw na ang mabuking

Tatanggapin mo’y puro mura ....

Ha, ha, ha ... yup kang Hudas ka

Barabas ka, Hay Jude

He, he, Hestas at Caiphas pa

At lahat na, Hay Jude

Ma, ma, ma,... tay ka na sana

Ha-hayup ka , Hay Jude

Ha, ha, ha, ha , ha-hayup ka

Manigas ka, Hay Jude ...

(Repeat and repeat to fade)
