Pulp starts the year right

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Pulp is back on store shelves once again with its February 2011 issue. On the cover is Hilera which has gone a long way from its beginnings as a nationwide college band competition champ to becoming one of the most respected rock acts in the country, both live and on record. On this issue, the trio talks to editor-in-chief Joey Dizon about their third album, Kid In A Coma, and how they got around to making it.

Also in this issue is True Faith which is still at it while most of its ‘90s contemporaries have faded away. Contributing writer Richie Ramos catches up with Medwin Marfil and the rest of the band’s current line-up, and discovers how they keep themselves fresh and relevant after almost two decades in the biz.

Staff Writer Karen Sy, a musician herself, writes about two local female-fronted rock acts — the acclaimed Paramita and the fast-rising Ozawa, both of which have recently achieved plenty by releasing fine albums in 2010. On the Homegrown section, music editor Jason Caballa features several noteworthy solo artists: Swissy, Carlos Castaño, and Hannah+Gabi (the solo project of Ciudad’s Mikey Amistoso).

The February issue also contains exclusive Q&As with international modern rock acts Asking Alexandria (which are coming over on May 16 for a show at the Amoranto Theatre), Dying Fetus, Underoath and Evaline, coverage of the album launches of Nyctinasty, Salamin, Doki, and SS109, as well as other notable gigs around the country, regular columns by UK-based metal fan Lex Adarme, indie geek Diego Mapa, rock stylist/photographer Niña Sandejas and motoring/car audio expert Dong Magsajo, reviews of the latest album releases, and much more.

Pulp Readers will cheer in delight as PULP Live Productions, the events arm of Pulp Magazine, gets ready for the best music events this first quarter of the year. Starting Feb. 26, it’s Super Junior Super Show 3 live at the Araneta Coliseum. By March 9, Anberlin performs for the very first time live in Manila at the A.Venue along Makati Ave., and come April 30, it’s the annual PULP Summer Slam! Dubbed PULP Summer Slam 11: Resurrection, this year’s Slam will feature not just one, but three international heavy metal headliners: Death Angel, Hellyeah and thrash metal titans Anthrax. Tickets are available at TicketNet, TicketWorld and SM Tickets.

Pulp Magazine is available nationwide for P150 in leading bookstores and magazine shops.
