Dionne Warwick in Manila
MANILA, Philippines - Her illustrious four-decade career has made her an international musical legend. With over 100 hits for the past 52 years Dionne Warwick’s reputation as a hit-maker is firmly etched in the hearts of music lovers around the world.
Winning five Grammy Awards — the very first was in 1968 for Do You Know The Way to San Jose, Dionne is also the first female artist to win Best R&B Vocal and Best Pop Vocal in the same year (1979).
More than 30 of her hit songs were written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, her singles Walk on By, Alfie and Don’t Make Me Over are in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Dionne was blessed with the rare chance to work closely with musical icons. First with Bacharach and David, the second was with Clive Davis’ Arista label, where she had 14 hits, including I’ll Never Love This Way Again, Déjà vu, Heartbreaker and That’s What Friends Are For.
Her recordings of songs like A House Is Not A Home, Alfie, (Theme From) The Valley of The Dolls, and The April Fool made Dionne the first female artist to popularize classic movie themes.
In recent years, Dionne’s pioneering efforts have focused on leading the music industry in the fight against AIDS. Her Grammy-winning, chart-topping single That’s What Friends Are For, led the way by raising millions of dollars for AIDS research.
Throughout the world, Dionne has devoted countless hours to a wide range of humanitarian causes, serving as the US Ambassador for Health as early as the ’80s. On Oct. 16, 2002 she was named global ambassador for the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), based in Rome, Italy. Dionne has spearheaded the long overdue development and production of a history book that will detail African and African-American history for use in schools, libraries and bookstores throughout the world. She continues her work as a socially conscious and concerned global citizen.
