Educating the young minds
MANILA, Philippines - Eugenio “Boy” Abunda has taken a new challenge — that of an educator at The Philippine Women’s University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Arts under the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEP).
Just as he has shown his mettle in this chosen craft, Abunda early on is doing exceptionally well in his new-found profession.
In celebration of the World Teachers’ Day last Oct. 5 as declared by the Department of Education and UNESCO, Abunda was cited by PWU as one of the Top 10 faculty members for the first trimester SY 2010-2011.
Abunda also holds a PWU certificate from a seminar course at the HZB (Helena Z Benitez) International Relations and Diplomacy School headed by Ambassador Rosario Manalo. At present he is enrolled in the School of Arts and Science working on his Master of Arts in Communication.
Starting the first semester of SY 2010-2011 (June to September), Abunda known in showbiz as the King of Talk, taught Radio and Television Principles and Practices among third year students of the School of Arts and Sciences.
In an interview, he said it was his big dream to teach. “I am excited doing this new chapter in my life,” he enthused.
In class, which takes three to four hours, Abunda shares with the students his wide range of experiences and knowledge as a television and radio personality.
“At the same time,” he added. “I learn something new from students which I find so fulfilling.”
Regina Palma, one of his students said “Mr. Abunda is accommodating, entertaining and full of knowledge.” He advised us that when you enter the world of media, you have to be passionate about your job and willing to learn just like a student.”
This was concurred by Amy Faith Buyco, another student who said, “When he talks you really have to listen.” He is a teacher like no other, applying his experiences in life in the lessons he gives.”
Buyco further expressed, “I learned not just the subject at hand but how to cope with life and he inspires us to soar higher. I will always remember his advice not to let anxiety get on our way because anxiety is worst than fear.”
Having been interviewed by Abunda in some of his TV programs, PWU Board chairperson Dr. Helena Benitez commented, “He has impressed me with his insights and the quality of the research he undertakes to prepare for his program.”
“He does his homework and does his job seriously. This may be why he is such a great success in media,” Benitez added.
