The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Rotary International District 3780, through its governor, lawyer Pablo “Ambo” Gancayco, recently launched the Q.C. — Green City project aimed at greening Quezon City, the area covered by the district. The project is in close coordination with Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte who both have environmental awareness and greening of Quezon City as one of their major thrusts during their term. The project has two lead Rotary Clubs namely, the Rotary Club of Quezon City Circle headed by global president Cristy Dagdag and Rotary Club of Eastwood headed by global president Grace Vinarao, and is coordinated by the District Environment chairperson past president Baby Buenaventura.

Last month, the first major event was held at the Quezon Memorial Circle where the Rotary District spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Quezon City Circle and joined in by several other District 3780 Rotary Clubs through their global presidents, planted trees all around the Quezon Memorial Circle. Bautista and Gancayco led the planting and repainting of the Quezon Memorial Circle.

On Oct. 10, another planting event will be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle to be participated in by all the 95 active Rotary Clubs under the leadership of Gancayco. In the meantime, in coordination with the Office of Mayor Bautista and Vice Mayor Belmonte, other Quezon City areas that need greening will be planted with trees by individual Rotary Clubs. Part of the project is going down to the grassroots, teaching Quezon City residents effective waste management and how to clean and green their neighborhoods.

Gancayco and his 95 global presidents aim to make the greening project have a long and lasting impact that will not only make Quezon City more beautiful but more importantly, a healthier place for its residents, students and workers.
