Extreme moments in Chris Tiu's life
I’ve always found Chris Tiu to be extremely polite and proper, but also extremely serious. But one evening during dinner break on the set of his Saturday night GMA 7 show Pinoy Extreme Talent, where I occasionally sit as judge, I caught him in a light mood and took this opportunity to ask him extremely light questions about little and some significant details that happened in the past — all the way to the present. Here are some extreme moments in Chris’ life:
The longest time he spent sleeping: 17 hours. This was after he spent two straight nights of not sleeping because of studies (school projects and deadline) and basketball practice. The other time he also slept that long was when he took a vacation in Canada when he slept 15 hours straight — “because it was cold there at masarap matulog.”
The farthest distance he traveled locally — In General Santos City. He was in high school that time and played basketball for a tournament down south. To his regret, he never saw much of General Santos City because from the airport they went straight to the hotel and proceeded immediately to the gymnasium and back to the hotel. But that is the farthest spot he has been to the Philippines.
The farthest distance he traveled abroad — London. This was the time he went on vacation with his brother and had the time of his life going around the city.
The biggest quantity of cups of rice he had consumed in a single meal — seven cups. Since we were talking over dinner, I was unable to resist asking how much rice he had eaten in one sitting and was a bit surprised when he told that, yes, in a Chinese restaurant one time, he wolfed down seven cups of yang chow fried rice — “because it was so delicious.” But now that he is more disciplined when it comes to taking care of himself and his well-being, he consumes only a cup of rice and that he already finds “a lot.”
The largest quantity of cake he has eaten, again in one sitting — eight slices. He remembers that was ube cake that was served during a simple birthday party for one family member at home. Oh, he kept coming back for more, more and more.
The biggest quantity of ice cream he ate in a single day — a whole gallon. It was vanilla ice cream. But this he wants to clarify: He ate that in two sittings — after lunch and the rest after dinner.
The longest time he partied in one evening — seven hours. He and his friends began the night-out at the Embassy Bar at 11 p.m., moved to other watering holes after that until they decided that they already had their share of fun by 6 a.m. and headed home to rest. But no, Chris insists that this incident happened only once. To begin with, he claims he is not a party animal and I believe that because never did we hear that he got into this and that kind of trouble. In fact, I’m surprised that he gets to party. But he deserves that. After all, he had given so much of his time to his studies, to his basketball and now to his career on television. A little fun won’t hurt.
The longest time he harbored any resentment toward anybody in his life — six years. This was in high school and the person involved was his best friend. No, he’d rather not get into details, but the whole episode began when he felt that his principles were already being sacrificed and that the values his parents taught him growing up were just going to be thrown into the waste basket if he were to succumb to it. He stuck to what he believed was right to the very end. Unfortunately, he suffered because of that because it came out like he was “the bad one.” After giving me a hint of what it was all about, all I can tell you is that even at a young age, he was already a principled person and what he did was right any angle you look at it. I admired and respected him all the more for that.
The longest time he nursed a heartbreak — three months. It only lasted that long because he and the girl eventually reconciled.
The longest love relationship he has had — nine years. Yes, it’s the same girl he reconciled with after that heart-breaking three-month cool off.
