Body Talk with Voizboys
Good looks, good voices and much, much more!
Collectively known as VOIZboys, (in no particular order) Jay-R Siaboc, Guji Lorenzana, Nico Antonio and Tom Rodriguez will launch their eponymous debut album (under Quantum Music and distributed by Star Records) with an all-night party touted as Fusion on May 29, starting at 9 p.m., at Zirkoh Tomas Morato, with Pokwang, Saicy Aguila, Carol Leus and The Rainmakers as guest performers (Arpie and the Multivitamins Band will supply the live music).
Under Star Magic and as regular performers on the ABS-CBN Sunday noontime show A.S.A.P. XV, Voizboys is described as “a music diversity waiting to happen.” “We put the boys together to generate additional exposure and interest for the artists,” Star Magic head Johnny “Mr. M.” Manahan was quoted as saying. “Salamat na lang at swak na swak silang apat.”
Jay-R, 23, and Guji, 27, are into rock. Nico, 26, is into ballads; while Tom, 22, does pop music.
Jay-R’s excellent singing skills were honed by the best performance mentors including Joey Reyes, Kitchie Molina and Monet Silvestre when he joined Pinoy Dream Academy (Season 1) as a scholar and finished first runner-up. Jay-R comes from a marginalized family in Cebu who has made something of himself in a big(ger) city. He can also act as he has proven in such ABS-CBN TV shows as Pangarap na Bituin, Palos, Kapitan Boom and Kambal sa Uma.
Raised in the US, Guji is a TVC model, Mellow Touch 94.7 DJ and an alternative singer. His singing, acting and dancing skills bagged him a role in the Trumpets production of West Side Story, with Karylle and Christian Bautista. Guji’s three indie albums (Five Days More, Guji Lorenzana and Without Your Love) earned him a nomination for Best Male Performer from the 2008 Awit Awards. A member of Star Magic Batch 16, he appeared with Kaye Abad in Book 6 of Precious Hearts Romances Presents Bud Brothers and did cameos in the movies Babe, I Love U and Miss You Like Crazy.
Nico comes from a clan of scientists and lawyers; his uncle was part of the ‘70s quartet The Rainmakers. An Ateneo high school graduate, he’s now a Law senior at San Sebastian College. He has appeared in the award-winning films Minsan Pa, Kubrador and Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan, and sings the theme song (Kahit Isang Saglit) of Biyaheng Lupa. He’s in the cast of Emir, a P50-M original musical film directed by Chito Roño, in Kim Garcia’s Magkakapatid and in a forthcoming ABS-CBN soap.
Tom, the Pinoy Big Brother Double Up housemate, was born in Samar and raised in the US. He made his acting debut with Jake Cuenca and Christine Reyes in Precious Hearts Romances: My Cheating Heart, followed by a starrer with Valerie Concepcion in Love Me Again. He plays Angelica Panganiban’s groom in Here Comes the Bride.
The VOIZboys are launching their 10-track album with six group songs and four solo numbers (with the rest of the members doing chorus), using seven original songs and three revivals. It has two new Vehnee Saturno compositions (Sinta and Kakaiba Ka, Jay-R’s solo), Joven Tan’s Todo Na, and Pwede Na (Tom’s solo), Yugel Losorata’s Stop the World, Lucien Letaba’s Anghel Ko (Guji’s solo), Jojo Panaligan’s In Love Again, two songs (You and Me and Maria Clara) by Mon Villanueva of The Rainmakers and Sana’y Malaman Mo (by Louie Ocampo and Ogie Alcasid, Nico’s solo).
(Note: Fusion is presented by Caltex, Sumisho Motor Finance and Splash. Tickets priced at P1,000 and P600 are available at Ticketworld [911-5555] and at the newly-opened Zirkoh Tomas Morato [call Weng at 887-0226 or 0917-800-0556].)
Who is the VOIZboys member you’d like to swap body with and why?
Nico: Jay-R Siaboc. Bilib ako sa voice power niya.
Tom: Nico, kasi masipag mag-gym. I haven’t gone to the gym for six months and I’m asking Nico to help me get back to my old form.
Guji: Nico, because he’s the type na focused sa buhay. He always gives 110 percent to whatever he’s doing. Doesn’t matter what it is, he always puts in all his effort. Kaya magiging successful si Nico. At sa body kasi, genetically fit siya. Hahahaha! Konting sit up, may six-pack na agad siya!
Jay-R: Nico’s body and Tom’s height. If ever that body swap happens, ewan ko na lang kung hindi magkandarapa sa akin ang lahat!
How do you take care of your voice?
Nico: I sleep on time, I don’t take cold drinks, and I exercise and vocalize regularly. Before a show, I massage my face, my tongue, throat and neck. Then I vocalize.
Tom: I don’t drink cold beverages before a performance. And I try to get some rest whenever I can.
Guji: I take care of my voice by trying to sleep more often.
Jay-R: Tamang pahinga hangga’t maari. Whenever I sing any song, especially rock songs which I love to sing, I make sure that I don’t overwork my vocal cords.
What part of your body would you be proud to show off?
Nico: Abs ko kasi pinaghirapan ko ito and I’ve been maintaining this for 19 years already.
Tom: My dimple kasi kahit nag-iisa siya, hindi niya ako pinababayaan.
Guji: Heart ko dahil I’m one of the most loyal and caring persons you’ll ever meet. But it takes time to know that side of me. Kasi I’m very vulnerable to heartbreak. Kaya I moved to the Philippines to move on from a heartbreak. All I know is I love real good. Hahahahaha! I left everything behind in the States to follow my dreams of being a singer here in the Philippines.
Jay-R: My eyes. Why? Sometimes I can read people’s minds and also I can express myself without saying anything. All you have to do is look at me in the eyes. Isa ‘yan sa talents ko.
What’s your shoe size? Does size matter to you?
Nico: Size 10. Depende kung anong bagay ang mine-measure ang size. I believe having big feet is an advantage because it makes all the other body parts appear big as well.
Tom: Size 11. Does size matter to me? Not really. Sometimes the biggest things come compact like microchips.
Guji: Size 9.5. Size doesn’t matter because it’s how you love naman that counts but I like petite girls.
Jay-R: Size 9. For me, size doesn’t matter; it’s the performance that matters!
How do you take care of your body to keep it performing to the max?
Nico: I sleep for eight hours per night. I take multivitamins B, C, E and calcium. I eat healthy food. Morning and evening, I eat oatmeal or cereal with skimmed milk. Sa lunch lang ako heavy but I eat only fish, chicken or veggie-meat. I drink a lot of water and I exercise as often as I can.
Tom: I sleep when I can. I take multivitamins and vitamin C.
Guji: I try not to drink soda. And I try to laugh a lot.
Jay-R: I love sports games. I do boxing from time to time, and I play soccer and basketball a lot.
What’s the sexiest thing you ever did with your body?
Nico: I did Body Shot with this girl. I did it using my whole body. A Body Shot is a form of drinking where another person puts salt on your body and after taking the shot, to lick that salt on that body part where it was placed. Erotic but...salty!
Tom: Body paint random abstract shapes and colors on a date, the girl I was seeing at the time. The texture of the paint against my skin was an interesting feeling as it was for her. It was a unique experience.
Guji: Depends who I’m with at that time so you have to ask those girls. Hahahahaha! I don’t know off hand.
Jay-R: I was with a mixed group of male and female friends at a beach resort. Night swimming...we did Spin the Bottle. There were these two girls who sprayed whipped cream on my nipples and licked them. It was crazy but I kinda liked it! Hahahahaha!
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve done to your body?
Nico: Getting a membership in a gym for my regular workouts. I’m not really a big spender.
Tom: Getting an X-ray for my rib kasi I hurt it while doing a stunt sa taping ng TV show.
Guji: Probably getting a really good massage at a spa.
Jay-R: Nothing specific but I’m willing to spend any amount so I will not be overweight again!
What’s the most in-demand part of your body?
Nico: Definitely my abs kasi malaki and proportioned.
Tom: My eyes. They are the most praised part of my body.
Guji: My eyes. Because they tell a girl exactly how I feel. They speak more than words can tell.
Jay-R: Also my eyes.
And the most pampered?
Nico: My butt kasi I try hard to develop it talaga. I do deadlifts to curve my back and make my butt visible. Tapos I develop the same by doing lunges and squats.
Tom: My stomach. I always feed it with monggo and Baguio beans.
Guji: My face. Lately, I’ve been enjoying facials at Faces and Curves.
Jay-R: The truth is I want to pamper my body if there is a way I can do it without having to spend a lot.
Dare to expose your body frontally?
Nico: Yes because I have the body to flaunt. Hahahahaha!
Guji: No, I wouldn’t expose frontally. If a role called for it, I’d have to question the motive. I think you can still be sexy without having to do that. I’d say no. To each his own.
Tom: Yes kasi wala namang masama kung tasteful ang pagkakagawa. Diyos mismo ang gumawa sa atin ng ganoon sa pagsilang pa lang natin...bibigyan pa ba natin ng malisya?
Jay-R: Naku, I’m hot but I’m not sexy. Hahahahaha! Hindi ko kaya yun; mahihiya ako.
