Jennifer Jones' Carrie, circa '51

- Danny Dolor -

Long before the Sissy Spacek starrer Carrie in 1976, Jennifer Jones starred in a similarly titled movie in 1951. While Spacek’s Carrie is about the telekinesis revenge of a high school girl, Jones’ Carrie tells of the exploits of a sophisticated lady, “using men even when she didn’t want to.”

Jones’ leading man is the British actor Laurence Olivier, knighted by Queen Elizabeth in later years.

Jones’ Carrie, produced and directed by William Wyler, is from the novel by Theodore Dreser, titled Sister Carrie. Spacek’s Carrie, directed by Brian de Palma, is adapted from the novel by Stephen King.           — RKC
