Best Actress Oscar for Shirley Booth
Little Sheba in the movie is actually a lost dog whose return a troubled and tired couple eagerly await. The couple are played by Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth. He’s an alcoholic doctor driven to violence and she’s the frumpy, loquacious wife. They’re trapped in a loveless shotgun marriage.
Come Back, Little Sheba opened Christmas week of 1952 in order to qualify for the Academy Awards. The strategy worked. Booth won the Oscar Best Actress, besting the likes of Susan Hayward (With a Song in My Heart), Joan Crawford (Sudden Fear), Bette Davis (The Star), Julie Harris (Member of the Wedding).
