In a community where everything is a commodity

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Baklas, the practice of cannibalizing a usable part of a gadget or machine, gets a human face in the indie film produced by Roland Sanchez and directed by Neal Tan and Rosanna Roces.

The indie film is about an organized crime syndicate preying on the poor and catering to the wealthy local and foreign clientele.

It is the story of unparalleled love for a daughter caught in a series of circumstances that allow a syndicate to buy a human organ for a fee.

The setting is a depressed area in Tondo called Baseco. It is against this backdrop that a couple, played by Rosanna and Roi Vinzon, shows how their desperation makes them prey to crime syndicates that degrade human dignity.

Their handicapped daughter played by Vei Vera a.k.a. Kuhdet Honasan and supporting actors and actresses Liza Lorena, Melissa Mendez, Maria Isabel Lopez, Pia Moran, Roldan Aquino, Aiza Marquez, Jao Mapa, Raymond Cabral and Tiya Pusit make Baklas a must-see.

Roi as Lando, an ex-convict resists the lure of money from the human organ syndicate. But he is trapped in a situation where he has to put his life on the line to save his daughter. The supporting stars play various roles that expose the lack of efforts on the part of the authorities to solve the problem..

Baklas may inspire moviegoers to help in the fight against a form of crime that preys on people desperately in need of instant money.
