My most memorable show ever

Frederick Peralta - The Philippine Star

As I celebrate my 25 years in fashion, I can say with all my heart that I am truly blessed. When I entered the industry in the early ‘80s, I never knew — though I always prayed — that I would last this long in a profession that boasts of many creative talents. Because I worked hard and aimed to be consistently excellent at my craft, I am confident to this day that I have what it takes to be a successful fashion designer.

It was with great pride and immense pleasure that when I was told by Runaway Productions and the brothers Audie and Joey Espino that I would be the opening solo gala at the recent Philippine Fashion Week at the SMX Convention Center, I heartily accepted the honor. I immediately buckled down to work and promised myself that I would mount the most memorable show of my career.

Together with some of my favorite models, I asked some of my celebrity clients to be part of my celebration. Much to my delight, they readily said yes. My muse, Assunta de Rossi, was resplendent in an off-white and gold gown with caviar beadwork. Senator’s wife Christine Escudero glittered in a crystal-encrusted number. Agot Isidro gave a serious spin to her couture creature.

Carlene Aguilar strutted her Miss World form. Newly married Joyce Jimenez showed why she is a sex goddess. Mariel Rodriguez couldn’t hide her excitement as she imagined herself getting married someday, as did fellow Wowowee host Valerie Concepcion. Macau-based supermodel Joy Caralde wowed the well-heeled crowd in the most exquisite bridal design. MYX VJ Samuel Pinto looked lovely as ever.

The men couldn’t be ignored, of course. Former models Dr. Hayden Kho and Will Devaughn, newly minted celebrities in their own right, cut dashing figures on the runway. La Salle basketball star Simon Atkins was handsome in cashmere gabardine.

But it was model-host Wilma Doesnt who stole the show. Like a mother hen, she herded ring bearers and flower girls and guided them in their first exposure to the limelight.

I am eternally grateful to the stars who graced my show. They really gave glamour to the occasion. They submitted themselves to fittings and accommodated me in their hectic schedules. Backstage, they never had any diva demands and waited until it was their turn to be made up. I know they made sacrifices just to be there for me.

My mom and son were there to share in my joy. My partner, Odelon Simpao, a designer on the rise, was also there to lend his support. I am also thankful to Jinky Ilusorio, Koala and Rudy Adriatico for the hair and makeup, Gerry Sunga for the gorgeous accessories and Ted Manuel for the bouquets.

It was truly an unforgettable evening.
