Eat at thirty (Part 3)

ME, STARZAN - Joey de Leon -

Here is the continuation of Thirty Things You May Not Know About Eat, Bulaga!

TWENTY-ONE — Immediately after the tragic ULTRA stampede, Eat, Bulaga! decided to suspend the Wala ‘Yan Sa Lolo Ko joke portion in our regular Bulagaan segment. This was in deference to the numerous old folks, especially the lolas, who perished and got injured in that shocking incident.

Actually, there was a little debate and discussion among us whether to temporarily put a stop to it or not. To others, it might sound corny but it really happened. After several months, the Wala ‘Yan Sa Lolo Ko bit resurfaced in our Ang Joke Joke segment. Someone commented, “Mabuti pa nga ang Bulaga, may sinuspinde eh!” Ngak!

TWENTY-TWO — Before TVJ hosted EB, they were first hired by the producers of Bulaga to host the regional finals of the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant which took them to nine cities around the Philippines.

TWENTY-THREE — From Day One of Eat, Bulaga!, until today, and even on Iskul Bukol, hindi “nagkakaayos” ang Tito, Vic and Joey — Ops — no reactions, please! — ang ibig sabihin noon: hindi kami nagme-make-up! True. Even in the movies, we only apply or wear makeup whenever we appear as gays. And of course, in commercials. Why? Hindi lang kami nasanay.

When I did those three Barbi movies, parusa talaga! “Suffer-star” ako noon!

But going through the experience, I really learned to be a lady — I learned to smoke cigarettes without staining the filters with lipstick, I learned how to easily and quickly remove false eyelashes and I learned to pick up things with very long fingernails. Pero jumi-jingle pa rin ako nang patayo!

During one shooting in Makati, na-jingle ako. Completely dressed as Barbi, with stockings, heels and all, I hurriedly ran to the men’s room and “confessed” in one of the urinals. Lahat ng mga sumunod at nakakita sa akin napaurong! Ngek!

TWENTY-FOUR — In the early years of EB, kanya-kanyang bayad (KKB) ng lunch. “Poor” pa kami noon — pati sa ratings. Buhay na buhay ang canteen ng Channel 9 — siyempre, pati Student Canteen!

TWENTY-FIVE — Eat, Bulaga!’s first slogan (printed on tees) was “HANGGA’T MAY BATA, MAY EAT BULAGA!”.

TWENTY-SIX — About a year after, another came out — ang nakatatak: “EAT BULAGA IS ONE YEAR OLD — 99 YEARS TO GO!”

Susmaryosep, ang ibig sabihin ba nito — 70 years pa naming makakasama si ALLAN K.?! Ngik!

TWENTY-SEVEN — TVJ used to call their little girls (Tito’s Ciara, Vic’s Danica and Joey’s Jocas) as The Supremes — kasi puro kakulay ni Halle Berry.

O, wala nang aangal girls — mabuti na ‘yon kaysa naman — Parokya ni Patani! Ngok!

TWENTY-EIGHT — In the ‘80s, the theme songs of two of the more popular kiddie shows in Philippine TV were composed by two Eat, Bulaga! originals — director Bert de Leon for Kaluskos Musmos and Joey de Leon for Kulit Bulilit.

TWENTY-NINE — The hosts of Eat, Bulaga! today who became contestants on EB are Pauleen Luna (Little Miss Philippines), Jose Manalo (Metallic Gigolo, a dance competition, plus many other contests) and Michael V. (rap contest).

The other notable names in showbiz who started out as Eat, Bulaga! contestants were Donna Cruz, Jericho Rosales, Alice Dixson, Arnold Clavio, Gladys Reyes, Dennis Padilla, Francine Prieto, Andrew E., Rosanna Roces and Aiza Seguerra.

THIRTY — Up to now, every time and before they make an entrance to do a number in special shows here and abroad, TVJ still gives one another palm slaps.

Taran-Tula

(Tula para sa mga tarantadong takot na takot at lungkot na lungkot tumanda’t kumulubot)

I

‘Wag kayong matakot magka-EDAD,

‘Wag kayong malungkot, ‘yay tunog GOD,

Talagang age natin ay uusad,

Mag-edad is not bad, so don’t be sad.

II

Hanggang edad is spelled E-D-A-D,

Aprub at ayos lang ‘yan kumpare,

Be afraid lang at sure kang na-leche

Pag letters na-mix sa D-E-A-D!
