Maverick Ariel want to be ahead of the pack

Bot Glorioso - The Philippine Star

Since they made an eye-catching and attention-grabbing appearance on TV, Maverick Relova and Ariel Villasanta have created a niche in local tinseltown’s comedy arena with a brand of humor only they could deliver. But what complements their funny antics are the colorful outfits the two wear with utmost confidence.

“It’s not just creating my own style. Every outfit  I wear really speaks of my personality. That’s why I never give them away whether I got them from ukay-ukay or not because the clothes or shoes speak loudly about me — about my  uniqueness,” Maverick says.

“I was the Candyman in college. I was always in all-pink, all-yellow and all- violet get up. I’m confident about showing that I can carry these clothes without appearing as if I’m trying hard. Until now, I wear what I want even if some see it as weird,” Ariel shares.

He and Maverick scour ukay-ukay shops for clothes but most often they design their own. Their clothes are also custom-made for them. Ariel prefers the Don Juan de Marco and Count of Monte Cristo style, while Maverick goes for wing-collared polo which he could wear with a big bow tie for that  distinct look.

People, Maverick and Ariel agree, should dress according to what they like and not confine themselves to wearing just black or white. That is why the duo’s uniqueness screams the loudest in their every attire. It displays the kind of confidence everyone should possess and catches the attention they deserve.

In fact, Maverick and Ariel have also caught GMA 7 executives attention as Tom and Jerry, Robin Padilla’s comic inmates on Joaquin Bordado. The duo also recently became contract artists of the Kapuso network’s film outfit. GMA Films president Annette Gozon-Abrogar will subject Maverick and Ariel’s wit, confidence and style to an acid test via the  reality movie titled Maverick and Ariel’s First Ever Ever Movie Hollywood or Else (Ang Pinakamahabang Title ng Movie sa Balat ng Lupa).

“We want to give Filipino moviegoers something new. Their tandem and humor are not yet seen on the big screen so we are excited to know what they will do,” Annette says during the send off party cum presscon for the duo.

Maverick and Ariel will travel to California, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas for two weeks for their reality movie that aims to document their attempt to get special audition in the American Idol (AI) season seven. And since the auditions had already ended, they will use their charm and do everything just to come face to face with AI judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. There will be no script for the movie as its director Aleah Aliporo will only guide them in bringing out the humor in every scene.

“If ever we get jailed for what we will do, we’ll still document it for the movie,” Maverick says in jest.

For his part, Ariel says wittily, “We’ll be going to Hollywood to share our talent and it’s about time to go international because there’s no challenge here anymore.”

They, too, have prepared a Tagalog song translated in English as their entry song.

The duo is not  limited to turning serious matters into belly aching situations. They also take their work outside the showbiz spotlight seriously. Ariel, a cousin of Joey de Leon, is the creative director of PLDT for some years now while Maverick, who took up Aero Space Engineering at Airlink Aviation School, writes a column for an aeronautics magazine and spends his free time tuning up his collection of eight vintage cars.

“Actually, we’re serious naman. Performers like us should be three or four steps ahead of what people are thinking so they wouldn’t know what we are going to do next,” Ariel says.

Whether you laugh at them or not, Maverick and Ariel will continue to bring color and wit to the showbiz scene.
