Kris spends day, birthday shopping toys for sons

Kris Aquino is turning 37 today but she’s not celebrating, not in the style that stars of her magnitude are expected to.

“I’ll have a quiet dinner with my family,” said Kris. “Before that, I’m inviting my close friends to hear a special Mass with us.”

She’s perhaps the only Valentine Baby who looks at the Day of Hearts as no big deal. In fact, she and husband James Yap are not in the mood for any grand celebration.

Instead, Kris will fulfill her promise to son Joshua, who’s turning 13 in June, to accompany him to a toy store. Her other son, James Jr. (who’s turning a year old on April 19), will also have his own share of whatever toys he takes fancy on.

Asked why she and James are not observing Valentine’s Day (with a candle-lit dinner, soft music and fine wine? Too boring for Kris?), she said, “We’re saving for our house.” (Actually, they moved to their dream house late last year but they are still putting additional touches here and there.)

Now the Commercial Queen, Kris is the new endorser of GynePro, the feminine wash.

“I endorse only products that I use and believe in,” said Kris (who’s shooting an alcohol commercial anytime now).

She added that she turned down an eight-figure offer simply because she doesn’t believe in the product.

Incidentally, Kris happily reported that Joshua has finally come to terms with the fact that he’s now sharing his mom’s affection and attention with brother James Jr.

“After nine months,” said Kris who one time came home and saw the two boys singing together.

“Would you believe that James Jr. now knows how to sing Bayan Ko? Guess who taught him how — my mom (former Pres. Cory Aquino).” 

Besides Kris, other Valentine-born celebrities include Sen. Juan Ponce-Enrile, Heart Evangelista, John Prats, Roxanne Guinoo, Donna Cruz and Rico J. Puno.

KC cries for MMK

From the trailer alone of her acting debut in tomorrow night’s episode of the multi-awarded ABS-CBN drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (hosted by Charo Santos-Concio), it’s clear that KC Concepcion has taken after her parents, Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, not only in looks (more of Gabby, though) but also, more so, in talent.

In a scene at the morgue showing her with Ricky Davao as her dead father, KC cries real tears. Her acting is Gabbing-Gabby, especially when her pretty face is contorted with grief. In the episode, also starring Agot Isidro as KC’s mom and directed by Jerry Sineneng, KC  plays a rich girl whose life is turned upside-down when her father dies in an accident, forcing her to adjust to poor surroundings and act as the family breadwinner. She’s credible as a working girl who takes the tricycle to and from work.

“It took me 22 years to do this,” said KC with a smile, referring to her much-awaited acting debut, summing up her early years watching her mom doing drama scenes on the set while she did her school assignments.

In the video shown at the MMK presscon, chronicling KC’s very public childhood, there was not a single photo nor even a mention of dad Gabby. No need. He’s all over KC who is her dad’s carbon-copy. (KC has four half-siblings: Frankie and Miel, Sharon’s daughters by husband Sen. Kiko Pangilinan; Gabrielle, Gabby’s daughter with Grace Ibuna; and Chloe, Gabby’s daughter with Jenny Syquia.)
