Christian sets series of shows

Star in a Million finalist Christian Bautista may not have brought home the grand prize in last year’s competition, but he’s certainly on a winning streak.

Enjoying No.1 airplay on radio stations like RX 93.1, a chart-topping album and a growing fan base of starry-eyed females (and males), Christian now knows there’s more than one way to becoming a winner. "I guess it was a combination of timing and wanting to succeed no matter what," says the 22-year-old balladeer. "I will always be grateful to Star in a Million for giving me a great star."

MTV’s Rising Star for April landed in MTV Diyes’ Top 10– not a bad feat for a newbie. His hit single and music video, The Way You Look at Me under Warner Music Philippines is now No.1 in the MYX ‘s daily countdown, edging out the likes of Britney Spears and Josh Groban.

Christian, a landscape architecture graduate, is a favorite in corporate event performances. He guests in a new TV show every week.

The first-time his would-be mentors spotted him at his Trumpets Playshop workshop recital two years ago, Christian sang Doors, from the Broadway musical revue Closer Than Ever. Little did he know that door after door would soon be opening for him from that day on. He was advised to follow up that auspicious beginning by auditioning for the theater company’s third run of the The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.

After thinking they had passed him over for callbacks, he finally got a call to report for rehearsals. Thus began his on-the-job training in professional theater.

Star in a Million happened a little later. Singing Leo Valdez’s Magsimula Ka may not have been the best move for the semi-finals (it signaled the end of his stint in the show), but he had already made a mark by then.

He considers the song prophetic–it ended one chapter in his then fledgling career, and ushered in an entirely new one: a pop presence to reckon with.

Martin Nievera hit the nail on the head when he said on air, "You don’t have to win to be a winner!"

Christian continues to win you over in his shows on May 21 and 22 in Davao and May 30 in Cavite.
