An awards body born out of controversy

Remember that raging controversy I tackled in this column early this year. It was when disgruntled members of the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) left the organization to form their own group, which they eventually called Entertainment Press Society (Enpress)?

That time, those who stayed behind with the PMPC and those in the breakaway faction were having a tug-of-war over the name "Star Awards."

The issue has finally been settled. Last March 13, the PMPC held its awards presentation and still called it "Star Awards." Next Saturday, April 24, the members of the newly-formed Enpress will also hold their first ever awards show, which they will call Golden Screen Awards.

To be produced by Tessie Celestino’s Airtime Marketing, Inc., the first Golden Screen Awards will be staged at the Meralco Theater. It will be aired on a slightly-delayed telecast at 9 of the same evening on RPN 9.

Hosting the program are Richard Gomez and Pops Fernandez with the help of segment hosts Judy Ann Santos, Dingdong Dantes and Aga Muhlach.

The opening production number will be participated in by Rachel Alejandro, Geneva Cruz, Franco Laurel and RJ Rosales – with the special participation of Jimmy Fabregas.

The rest of the numbers will be the rendition of the nominated theme songs to be interpreted by Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Angelika de la Cruz, Christian Bautista, Rachelle Ann Go, Raymond Manalo and Genevieve Villabroza.

The other night, during informal rites held at the Zirkoh Bar in Timog Avenue in Quezon City, the members of the Entertainment Press Society released its list of nominees for the first Golden Screen Awards. Here is the complete list:
