Laugh till you drop

- Ross Anthony -
A film so funny it grossed over $600,000,000 worldwide. It spawned a cartoon hit series on Cartoon Network and the dumb duo sold more than a million "dumb" toys manufactured by Mattel. The dumb guys are back:"dumberer" than ever in Dumb and Dumberer-When Harry Meets Lloyd.

This new dumb movie arcs like the back of a cat, beginning with silly ha-ha’s to chuckles, to laughs to belly-rolls by the finish line.

That said, the "No tag-backs" scene into the "Slushy speed sipping" scene had me laughing so hard, that I could barely see the screen through the tears in my eyes. Whew, much better films get me laughing that hard.

Eric Christian Olsen does a fine job recreating a young Jim Carrey. You know this kid watched a lot of Carrey movies for homework. In fact, the film is at its best when Harry and Lloyd are at play with each other.

This goof is better than you might expect, especially if you run from the so called "intelligent" films, can’t understand anything made by David Lynch and have no idea what a third act is. The prequel to the Jim Carrey-Jeff Daniels hit finds newcomers Eric Christian Olsen (he’s Lloyd) and Derek Richardson (that’s Harry) playing the brainless buds as they adjust to high school, fall for the same girls and inevitably foil the principal’s deceptive plan to embezzle school funds. Eugene Levy (American Pie) delivers a brilliant performance as the school’s shady head guy and Cheri Oteri plays his lover, the lunch lady. Overall, the film maintains the original feel with exaggerated pratfalls, bonehead wisdom and immature fart and poop jokes. Yeah, it’s totally stupid, but you already knew that.

You will laugh till you drop.

From the very beginning, Lloyd Christmas (Eric Christian Olsen) knew he had a friend for life in Harry Dunne (Derek Richardson). It’s the first day of high school and Harry, who previously has been home-schooled by his mother (Mimi Rogers), needs someone to show him the ropes. Lloyd, who conveniently lives in the school’s basement with his adoptive dad/school custodian Ray (Luis Guzman), turns out to be just the guy.

As the two set out to crack the "big show" (aka high school), they unwittingly fall into the web of the corrupt Principal Collins (Eugene Levy) and his girlfriend, head lunch lady Miss Heller (Cheri Oteri), who want them to be the first students in a phony "special needs" class in order to bilk $100,000 in grant money for themselves. As Harry and Lloyd enthusiastically venture out to recruit more students for this new class, they unwittingly catch the attention of the beautiful Jessica Matthews (Rachel Nichols of the upcoming American Wedding), a hard-hitting reporter for the school’s newspaper who suspects foul play.

Trying to help Jessica while unintentionally ear-deep in the plot themselves, Harry and Lloyd bumble into a shot at greatness when a supreme act of stupidity at the school’s Thanksgiving Day Parade turns the tables on Principal Collins.

New Line Cinema presents Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, which takes Harry and Lloyd back to their formative teen years where it all began at Providence High School — when Dumb literally ran headfirst into Dumberer.
