Pulp features Hed as its cover story

-
An angry transvestite rock star, pyromaniacs, hitmakers and soon-to-be rock stars of the food group variety make up this month’s issue of Pulp, the country’s biggest and loudest music magazine.

After romancing Germany, falling in love and undergoing a humiliating mutilation to gain entry to the Promised Land, Hedwig lands on Pulp’s cover with the theatrics of a circus freak show and the flamboyance of an alcohol-charged drag queen. Hedwig is the tragic character whose life story has spawned Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the most controversial play to hit off-Broadway and now, Manila. The local production stars Jake Macapagal as Hedwig, Lana Jalosjos, as Yitzak; directed by Bobby Garcia.

A musical masquerading as a rock concert, Hedwig reveals the story of a one-inch mound of flesh – a grotesque scar of dying hope – in a monologue in between rock songs and spins a tale of searching for true love and the discovery of self. Pulp takes its readers behind the scenes for an up close and personal look at the players and the putting together of a complex stage play.

Pulp
also offers a sonic buffet with features on new exciting "food groups" Strawberry Fields, Chocolatebeef and Brain Salad; and shares South Border’s tales of stale friendship, imprisonment and enlightenment, as told to Pulp’s Pearlsha Abubakar. Digging a little deeper into what’s happening in the current music scene, writer Mayo Uno Martin analyzes the reasons why, despite the number of ubiquitous singers and musicians in all parts of the globe, international success have continued to elude the Filipino artist.

Pulp
also features regular sections like Joey Dizon’s I Wanna Be A Rock Star, which continues last month’s lessons from guitar god Paul Gilbert; Metro Kat, which features the hottest find for lingerie lovers; Homegrown, Reviews; and the Letters section, where the ever-growing community of Pulp readers continue to hold an open forum.

Pulp
is the official magazine of Tower Records, and is given free for every P250 purchase in their three outlets. It is also available in all National Bookstore branches, and magazine stands all over Metro Manila. As the official magazine of Atlantis Productions’ Hedwig And the Angry Inch, Pulp will also be made available at the PCIBank Theater, Makati Ave., on all remaining play dates of the musical: Aug. 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and Sept. 1.
