The second coming of Bobby Andrews
July 5, 2001 | 12:00am
Gone are the days when loveteams were the only formula for young stars to carve a niche in show business. Bobby Andrews, (the other half of a love team he shared with Angelu de Leon) is here to stay. After a long hiatus from making movies, in which he is the lead character (he was last seen in Ang Lahat ng Ito’y Para Sa ‘Yo, playing lead role with Angelu), Bobby can be seen again on the big screen in a supporting role.
One might wonder why the good-looking mestizo agreed to do a supporting role when he was already a lead star years back.
In a presscon held recently at the Viva office for another movie of Aga Muhlach and Regine Velasquez, Pangako, Ikaw Lang, a romance-comedy-drama banking on the two lead stars’ chemistry in Dahil May Isang Ikaw, Bobby said, "Actually, I’m very happy playing supporting roles right now because I took a long break in the movies and I’m still getting my feet wet, so to speak, to get the feeling of doing movies again. Before, I used to have a screen partner. Might as well do supporting roles where I can get to play different roles and work with character actors."
In Pangako, Ikaw Lang, Bobby is the childhood friend of Regine who has high hopes of ending up with Regine but Aga comes in the way.
Asked about his working relationship with the cast, he told the press that it’s great working with them and it’s his first time to work with Aga, an opportunity he might miss if still stuck with a screen partner.
The Bobby and Angelu tandem ended in 1999 when the latter got involved with Joko Diaz. That was also the year when Bobby decided to do Katawan, a sexy movie with Rosanna Roces.
He is just too happy to be back again in the limelight that sees him in TV guesting and telesines when he’s not doing movies.
Given the chance, Bobby would also like to do heavy drama where he can prove his acting mettle. He also wants to get into comedy and action.
Now married to a Chinese, non-showbiz Bienne Co., and a father to two (Miguel Arthur, one and a half years old and Gabrielle, two months old) how does he feel being a father? "Being a father changes your entire outlook in life, you have a different perspective and everything you’re working for is concentrated on one thing, and that’s your family. It makes you do better in everything. Napipigil ko na rin yung masasamang bisyo (he was once rumored of frequently going to a gambling joint) and you stop going out for you have the responsibility," he answered.
Asked to comment about Angelu who was once romantically linked to him. Bobby said, "I don’t know what’s going on in her life. I haven’t talked to her for the longest time and I haven’t seen her and I don’t want even to say it’s a mistake what happened kasi she might be happy so I just wish her happiness."
