Pinoy celebs excited for Pope’s visit

Chuck Smith - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - Just like everyone else in the country, celebrities are also hit with Pope mania.

Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in the Philippines on Thursday afternoon. The Roman pontiff's first apostolic and state visit in the country will last for five days.

“Great day for our nation,” Derek Ramsay posted on his Instagram account with a photo of himself wearing a Pope Francis shirt.

Other artists will have a direct participation during the Papal visit. According to a TV report, Erik Santos will perform at the Luneta Mass on Sunday, while Angeline Quinto and Jed Madela will perform during the Encounter with the Youth activity at the University of Santo Tomas.

“Actually, 'yung mga kilala ko sa church, kinausap ko para ma-meet 'yung Pope. But they want 'yung visit ng Pope to be as private as possible,” actor Alden Richards said.

Alden added: “Nirereduce nila yung involvement ng mga celebrities para mas solemn. Kasi 'yung pagpunta ni Pope is for Christ and the Philippines.”

The GMA-7 star said he will try to attend one of the events of the Pope in Manila during his visit.

Jamie Rivera wrote and performed the official song of the Papal Visit, “We Are All God’s Children. But even the singer, dubbed as the “Inspirational Diva,” is not sure if she’ll have direct participation during the Papal visit.

Nonetheless, she said: “I also feel blessed because this is such a big event and I know that it would be recorded in history that I wrote and sung the song for the Papal visit.”

Young actress Janine Gutierrez also wishes she could attend the Pope’s mass in Luneta on Sunday. “But I think I have work,” she said. Still, the GMA-7 star is “glad that he’s here.”

“He’s such an inspiring individual kasi we know that the Church is so traditional, but he advocates new and modern things,” she said.

“Naging masaya po ako,” said “The Voice Kids” winner Lyca Gainarod, who will also perform at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday. “Sabi ko, ‘Salamat naging totoo 'yung wish ko na makakapunta na ako kay Pope Francis’.”

“Gusto ko po makalapit sa kanya at makapag-selfie,” Lyca added.

“Excited ako. Feeling ko blessed agad na paparating siya dito and swerte tayo dahil isa tayo sa napili niyang puntahan,” Julia Montes said.

“Sana lahat ng Pilipino ay maging open at mabuksan ang heart sa faith, love and peace,” she added.

“Pray for happiness and sa lahat ng kababayan nating Pilipino. Sa mga naranasan natin na problema, bigyan niya tayo ng lakas,” said Edgar Allan Guzman when asked what he would ask or tell the Pope if given the chance.

“Siguro sasabihin ko sa kanya to continue praying for us. Iyon naman ang kailangan nating lahat,” Janice de Belen said.

Of course we want the Pope to pray for us, said Jamie Rivera. But at the same time, the singer asks the public to pray for the pope as well.

“Hindi madaling maging Pope, so he also needs our prayers,” Jamie said.
