My Puhunan features Igorot designs

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Karen Davila (photo) details how an Igorot nurse built a multi-million fabric business while helping her fellow Igorot women today at 4 p.m. in the ABS-CBN show My Puhunan.

Narda Capuyan’s successful Narda’s store blossomed from her advocacy in promoting family planning. Back then, she realized that unwanted pregnancies could be prevented if mothers are kept busy with worthwhile pursuits.

So Narda provided yarns and used fabrics to a group of mothers, who then made them into beautiful blankets adorned with traditional Igorot designs. The handmade products became an instant hit when she sold them at gasoline stations.

Since then, Narda has helped her patients and provided jobs for her fellow Igorot natives. From La Trinidad, Benguet, her handmade garments have been showcased at several international fashion runways in America, Japan, Europe and Canada.
