MANILA, Philippines — To detect illegal Philippine offshore gaming operations, the Philippine National Police has directed PNP station commanders to work with local government units (LGUs) as investigators examine electronic devices seized during a Makati raid for possible links to other POGO operators.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said barangay officials and other local authorities play a key role in identifying suspicious establishments and monitoring the presence of foreigners who may be involved in prohibited offshore gaming operations.

“As we remain steadfast in the fight against POGO players, we believe that the goal of eradicating this illegal activity requires strong coordination and partnership with the LGUs,” Nartatez said in a statement yesterday.

He said POGO operators could attempt to resume their activities under the guise of legitimate businesses, underscoring the need for closer inspection, surveillance and information-sharing between police and local officials.

Nartatez also ordered investigators and forensic examiners to promptly analyze computers, laptops, mobile phones, storage devices and other electronic equipment seized in a POGO hub in Makati last week.

The operation, led by the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, resulted in the arrest of five people. Three others remain at large.

The raid was conducted in coordination with the Makati police, Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, Philippine Air Force, Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Anti-Cybercrime Group.

Nartatez said digital forensics could help investigators identify other people and groups involved in prohibited offshore gaming activities.

He directed investigators to examine the seized devices in accordance with procedures for search warrants and forensics.
