Early count, exit poll in elections show opposition leading Senate race

A study shows that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can prevent heart-related death in patients who had heart attack.

This study was conducted by the renowned Gruppo Italiano por lo Studio della Sopravvivenza nell’ Infarto Myocardio (GISSI) based in southern Italy.

The study reported that omega-3 PUFA improves clinical outcome in heart patients by decreasing total deaths by 40 percent, heart-related deaths by 30 percent and sudden deaths by 20 percent. The study was published in the prestigious journal Lancet.

GISSI lasted for two years and enrolled 11,324 patients surviving heart attack in the preceding three months. The subjects were divided into four groups and were randomly given supplementation of omega-3 PUFA, vitamin E or none at all.

While a reduction in death was seen in the omega-3 group, subjects who were given vitamin E supplementation showed no significant cardiovascular benefit.

Omega-3 PUFA prevents heart attack by producing a substance called prostacyclin which prevents blood from being sticky and prevents blood clot.

It also enhances the high density lipoprotein (HDL) which is also known as the good cholesterol, preventing the blocking of arteries of the heart and brain.

Omega-3 PUFA is derived from deep-sea fish but is now available in soft gel capsules. A daily dose of two to three soft gels of omega-3 supplement is highly recommended for those who suffered previous heart attacks and those who have risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol and strong family history of heart disease.
