Male cholesterol rises with age

-
As men reach the age of 50, they undergo various changes within their bodies that affect their health, disposition and libido. While it is widely known that women experience menopause during midlife, not many are aware that men also undergo a similar condition as they grow older. This is referred to as "andropause" or male menopause, basically defined as the deterioration of male hormone production.

Symptoms of male menopause are fatigue and loss of a sense of well-being, reduced libido and potency, depression, irritability and anger, desire for intimacy, joint aches and stiffness of hands, hot flashes and sleep disturbances, and changes in hair growth and skin quality.

There are many contributions to male menopause like stress and hypertension. It turns out that cholesterol is also an important factor to male menopause.

Prof. W.J. Serfontein, in his The South African Journal of Natural Medicine, pointed out the relationship between blood cholesterol and hormone levels.

When the testosterone level declines, the body starts to produce more and more cholesterol, thus increasing the cholesterol level and exposing the body to cardiovascular risks.

Because of the heightened threat of heart diseases, spouses and even employers have to be aware of this reality so as to easily identify men who are at risk early on and set precautionary action before it disrupts their work, home and families.

Also, male mid-life cholesterol crisis should be a growing consciousness not only in the medical field but also even in the general public.

For one, a regular check-up with the doctor is important to monitor rising levels of cholesterol and declining levels of testosterone.

As men reach their prime, they must ensure that bad cholesterol or LDL is below 100, while good cholesterol or HDL is above 40.

Physicians recommend men in mid-life to watch their diet. They should avoid junk food and beer and instead take fresh fish, olive oil, and foods rich in antioxidants and fiber.

Men can include milk like Nesvita Pro-Heart, which has Acticol that lowers bad cholesterol in the body, in their daily intake. Along with a healthy diet, regular exercise is also a necessity for mid-life men.

With a healthy body, a sound mind, a stress-free heart and a balanced and enjoyable life, men can be at their best even when they reach their golden years.
