P-Noy launches phase 2 of Malampaya

-

TABANGAO, Batangas, Philippines – President Aquino witnessed yesterday the awarding and signing of the first engineering design contract for Malampaya’s next phase development.

The next phase development aims to maintain the level of production and maximize the recovery of indigenous natural gas from Malampaya and Camago reservoirs.

Malampaya phase 2 will entail drilling and development of two additional wells by 2014 while the Malampaya phase 3 will involve the installation of a new platform where additional equipment and facilities will be housed by 2015.

The projects are seen to further benefit the country’s    energy self-sufficiency program and will continue to be a major source of power for Luzon’s energy requirements in the years to come.

Malampaya is one of the largest and most significant industrial endeavors in Philippine history.

The Malampaya gas field has been providing Luzon with clean power, reducing the country’s oil imports and increasing government revenues.

The government has so far received P200.41 billion in royalties from the Malampaya field as of May this year.

The Malampaya field supplies natural gas to the 1,200-megawatt Ilijan plant of Korea Electric Power Corp.; the 1,000-MW Sta Rita; and 500-MW San Lorenzo power plants, all in Batangas.

The undertaking was between field operator Shell Philippines Exploration BV and the Philippine unit of the US-based Fluor Corp.
