MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is preparing a feasibility study on the proposed special bus routes covering the stretch of Antipolo City and Manila for the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2).

The initiative was launched after the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) announced limited train availability on the LRT-2 due to ongoing upgrades and repairs, which are expected to prolong waiting times and cause congestion at the stations.

Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez has said that only eight of 10 trains are currently operational on the rail line, with one undergoing a train operating control panel upgrade and another still under repair.

“Our goal is to come up with new routes that will serve as an alternative mode of transportation for LRT-2 passengers,” acting LTFRB Chairman Greg Pua Jr. said.

Pua said the special bus routes would be “similar to the EDSA busway concept.” Pick-up and drop-off points will be designated near the LRT-2 stations.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) ordered the LTFRB and LRTA to review the bus service’s operational arrangements, compliance with franchising as well as regulatory requirements and fares.

Pua said the LTFRB would coordinate with the local governments of Antipolo City, Pasig, Marikina, Quezon City, San Juan and Manila for the special bus routes.

The DOTr is also looking for other funding sources to procure new train sets, Lopez said.
