The renaissance of John Prats’ leading man era

Many showbiz comebacks are carefully planned, but the ones that aren’t… well, those are more and unexpected, which can feel even more special because of it.
For John Prats, his return to the spotlight as a leading man just happens to be the latter.
After spending years increasingly known for his work behind the camera as a director, John is suddenly finding himself back in a space that longtime fans know very well: in front of the camera, looking every bit like the Y2K heartthrob they remember.
He has a new hairstyle, a more svelte stance and a sharper, more fashion-forward look. And perhaps most interesting is his reunion with one of the most significant leading ladies of his early career, Heart Evangelista, a showbiz sweetheart-turned-global fashion icon.
The former love team and real-life exes recently found themselves working together again, bringing back memories of the JoHeart era that once had young fans invested in their every move.

But there is a delicious twist to their reunion this time around. Heart, now one of the country’s most recognizable fashion personalities, had a hand in John’s new look.
“Hindi ko alam, bilis ng pangyayari. Makeover ni Heart ito, eh. After ko mag-guest sa show niya, ayun, tuloy tuloy na. Ang bilis,” he said.
And just like that, direk Praty appeared to have entered his leading man era once again.
It is a particularly interesting turn for John because, for many years, his professional identity has evolved far beyond the young actor’s audiences first knew.
He has established himself as a director, taking on projects behind the scenes and becoming a creative force in the industry. His work behind the camera has allowed him to grow into a different kind of showbiz personality, and one who creates rather than simply performs. He has directed top shows in the country such as “Ang Probinsyano” to “Rainbow Rumble” and concerts for Original Pilipino Music (OPM) stars like K Brosas, TJ Monterde and KZ Tandingan. He even has international shows on his credentials at this point.
But the camera, it seems, still remembers him. So do the fans.
John and Heart’s reunion recently sparked renewed interest online, particularly among those who grew up watching the two during the height of their popularity. The timing could not have been more nostalgic.
For a generation that remembers “G-mik,” “Trip,” “Berks” and their big-screen team-up, seeing John and Heart together again feels like opening an old photo album and discovering that the people in those photographs somehow still have the same chemistry.
Their story, of course, goes beyond the usual love-team narrative.
John and Heart were not simply paired for TV. They were each other’s first loves, something they openly revisited during Heart’s lifestyle and reality show, “Heart World,” earlier this year. Their relationship became intertwined with their careers at a time when love teams could define the trajectory of young stars.
In fact, The Philippine STAR has documented their rise from the very beginning. In 2003, Heart described John as one of the people closest to her, while their pairing was already being positioned as one of ABS-CBN’s prominent young love teams.
Their chemistry was also evident in the projects they shared. In 2003, this paper described the pair as one of the country’s popular young love teams, with their pairing eventually leading to their movie “First Romance,” later known as “My First Romance.”
For John, that period remains an important part of his story. And perhaps that explains why this recent reunion feels different. We could see the twinkle in his eyes when we visited him for a chat at the Cornerstone studios just last Tuesday.
It is not simply former love team partners recreating a moment for social media, but two people who have grown up, built separate lives and careers, and are now able to look back at their younger selves with greater understanding.
As John put it, “Talagang na-miss namin bawat isa. It took us 23 years to have that conversation. It was weird, but at the same time familiar ang feeling, parang laking chunk ng John and Heart sa career ko. Iyon ang peak ng career ko.”
There is something poignant about hearing John acknowledge just how significant the JoHeart chapter was to his career. The success was enormous, but so was the transition that followed.
And that is why his current renaissance is so fascinating. He is not the same young actor who once played the charming half of JoHeart. He is now a husband, a father, a director and an established creative. Yet somehow, when the camera turns toward him, that old charisma remains. Even Heart seems to recognize it.
The fashion icon’s involvement in John’s latest look adds another layer to their reunion. Once the young actress and leading lady opposite him, Heart has since transformed herself into an internationally recognized fashion personality.
The former love team now finds itself in a completely different creative dynamic. John is the follower of Heart’s fashion authority.
And suddenly, the Y2K heartthrob is being styled by the former leading lady who once stood beside him in front of the camera. Talk about a full-circle moment.
There is also another charming piece to the story: John’s wife, Isabel Oli, is among those who have long been supportive of his relationship with Heart as a friend and former colleague.
In fact, John revealed that Isabel had already seen him perform during his younger years.
“Backstory niyan is na-meet na pala ako ni Liv. Nag-mall show ako sa Cebu noon, and na-meet na pala niya ako noon. Isa siya sa nanonood sa’min. So, very fan siya ng ‘G-mik’ at JoHeart.”
But while the reunion may have awakened memories of the leading man John Prats, he is hardly abandoning the career he has built behind the camera.
If anything, his current renaissance proves that John has managed to keep both worlds alive.
He remains very much in demand as a director, particularly with the growing number of concert and live-show projects under his belt. He continues to have a full schedule, with tours and shows involving artists such as Yeng Constantino, TJ and KZ, among others.
So, is John officially returning to his leading man era?
Perhaps the better question is, why did we ever think that era had completely disappeared?
The JoHeart reunion may have started as a nostalgic moment. But it has turned into something bigger. It is a reminder that careers in showbiz do not always move in straight lines. Sometimes, you spend years behind the camera only to find yourself back in front of it.
