Ewan McGregor fulfills goal to work with 'fearless' Anne Hathaway
MANILA, Philippines — Getting to work with Oscar winner Anne Hathaway is a check off Scottish actor Ewan McGregor's list of dream collaborators.
The two portray a married couple in David Robert Mitchell's "The End of Oak Street," a sci-fi survival film about a family that finds their neighborhood transported to a different location filled with prehistoric creatures.
McGregor said in an interview that he has always wanted to work with Anne, fondly calling her by her preferred nickname Annie.
"I've enjoyed her work over the years and as soon as I heard she was doing this, I wanted to read it," the actor said of the project. "She is very real and honest, and fearless in terms of tackling the damage in Greg and Denise's marriage."
He pointed out to moments in the film where he and Anne's chracter are fueled by love that "got lost along the way" prior to the incident, noting how Anne's Denise is frustrated by his Greg not being open and present enough.
"She's a writer and a dreamer and she wants more from her life, and he's just a bit static," McGregor continued. "He's not moving forward in any way, and in actual fact, we know he lost his job, so he's slightly moving backwards. The complexity of all that was really fun to do."
McGregor also talked about working with Mitchell, best known for his previous two films, "It Follows" and "Under the Silver Lake."
The actor praised the filmmaker's writing and direction, calling him "incredibly generous and thoughtful about the acting, but at the same time really knows what he wants."
"He never allowed the highly technical nature of making a movie about dinosaurs chasing human beings detract from the acting experience of being those human beings," McGregor added.
