Olivia Rodrigo taps Robert Smith of The Cure for song on new album
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo just released her latest and third album "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," and a familiar face features in one of the songs.
Rodrigo has tapped Robert Smith, the veteran member of British rock band The Cure, to be her duet partner in the album's 10th track "What's Wrong With Me."
The young singer revealed Smith's participation days before her album dropped by bringing him out during the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain last week and performing their song live.
The Cure was a headliner at the festival, playing its first concert in 18 months by performing a whopping 29 songs.
Prior to Smith hitting the stage, Rodrigo — who belatedly announced her festival appearance — revealed it was "really special" as it was her first time having a featured artist across her three albums.
"I'm just so f***ing over the moon," Rodrigo said, later sharing after the performance, "I feel like I'm gonna cry… I can't believe that that's a thing that happened in the real world and not just a figment of my imagination."
Hints that Smith had a part in "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love" were laid early on with Rodrigo, including The Cure's hit song "Just Like Heaven" in the lyric of her new album's lead single "Drop Dead" and the second single literally titled "The Cure."
There is history between Rodrigo and Smith as two banded together during last year's Glastonbury Festival to perform "Just Like Heaven" and another popular song "Friday I'm in Love."
Rodrigo will promote "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love" with her "The Unraveled Tour" that runs from this September to May next year, comprising of 86 shows across North America and Europe.
