It is the main road in Cebu IT Park in Barangay Apas, Cebu City. The Cebu City Council on motion of Councilor ArsenioPacana on March 2, 2005 enacted Ordinance No. 2038 affirming the naming of the street in honor of "Jose Ma. del Mar" by the Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. on December 3, 2004.

The Cebu Newspaper Workers Foundation (Cenewof) requested the SangguniangPanlungsod of the City of Cebu to enact an ordinance naming the existing road in Cebu City, as "Jose Ma. del Mar Street", in honor of an outstanding figure in the history of Cebu Journalism and Letters.

Jose was a recipient of the "Premio Zobel" in 1965. He studied at the Seminario-Colegio de San Carlos and earned a bachelor's degree in Law at the Escuela de Derecho. He was the Spanish Section Editor of the following newspapers: La Revolucion (1910-1941) owned by Felimon Sotto, the El Precursor (1907-1941) of Mariano Jesus Cuenco, La Tribuna (1913) of Isidro Vamenta, El Espectador (1919) of Manuel C. Briones and Jose Avila's The Cebu Advertiser (1922-1942).

In1948, Jose founded Cebu's last Spanish language newspaper, the Spanish biweekly La Prensa, which lasted until 1972. He was also part of the Cebuano monthly magazine "Pilipinhon" from 1957 to 1961.

Jose, in collaboration with noted Cebuano writer Vicente Padriga was commissioned by the National Government to translate the works of Jose Rizal into Cebuano.

The street naming ordinance affirms the action of the Cebu Property Ventures Inc. to acknowledge and give imprimatur not only for the purpose of public convenience, but likewise officially ensuring its inclusion in the City's Schedule of Road Detail by the Geographic Information System.

Approved on Mar. 18, 2005 by Mayor Tomas T. Osmeña, the city secretary then was Estrella F. de los Reyes.
