Empowering teachers through theater education

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago - Visaya - The Freeman

While I may not have much strength or financial resources left, I still have time and a strong desire to share my knowledge and skills with those in need. On November 27, 2024, I eagerly accepted an invitation to be a resource person at a workshop for public school teachers, recognizing it as a valuable opportunity. I felt compelled to contribute to the education community and support fellow educators in their professional development. This chance to share my experience and insights was something I didn’t want to miss. Engaging with teachers and empowering them in their roles is a fulfilling way for me to make a difference.

The workshop featured teachers from the Toledo City Division, specifically 85 MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) educators from 13 different national high schools. Superintendent Dr. Joseph Irwin Lagura and MAPEH Supervisor Loida Lasco Allego were present to support the initiative. Titled "Theater Education: Elevating Teaching Practices for MAPEH Teachers", the event aimed to enhance teaching methodologies through creative approaches. The collaboration among these educators highlighted the importance of professional development in the arts. Overall, the workshop served as a platform for sharing innovative ideas and fostering community among MAPEH teachers.

As theater and acting are integral components of the Arts curriculum, I realized that teachers need to be properly trained to effectively deliver these lessons. Capacitating educators in this area is essential for fostering creativity and engagement among students. When teachers have the right skills and resources, they can create more dynamic and impactful learning experiences. This training not only enriches their teaching practices but also empowers them to explore their artistic potential. Ultimately, investing in professional development for MAPEH teachers will enhance the overall quality of education in the arts.

I was thrilled to have such enthusiastic participants who fully engaged in all the workshop activities. Their cooperation made the experience even more rewarding. As part of the session, I had the opportunity to show them my film, which illustrates the elements of characterization. This allowed us to explore how these concepts could be applied in their teaching practices. The interactive discussions that followed enriched our learning and fostered a collaborative environment among all the attendees.

The success of the workshop was largely due to the unwavering support from the officials of the entire Toledo City Division. This included the superintendent, supervisors, principals, coordinators and, of course, the teachers themselves. Their collective commitment to providing quality education for their students was evident throughout the event. This collaborative effort created an environment conducive to learning and sharing. It showcased the dedication of the entire educational community to continuously improve and enhance the teaching and learning experience.

Empowering educators through theater education is a transformative strategy that enhances teaching methods and boosts student engagement. By incorporating theater techniques, teachers can foster creativity, improve communication skills, and build confidence in their classrooms. This not only enriches the learning experience but also strengthens the connection between educators and students. Additionally, theater education promotes collaboration and teamwork, essential skills for today's collaborative workplaces. Ultimately, this approach creates a more vibrant and motivating educational environment that benefits both teachers and students.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Toledo City School Division for the opportunity to serve as a resource person in their in-service training for teachers. The remarkable showcase presented by the teacher-participants, highlighting their diverse forms of creative expression, was truly inspiring. Their exceptional performances not only demonstrated their dedication and talent but also enriched the learning experience for all involved.
