EDITORIAL — Like garbage
The bodies of three men were found in Sitio Mohon, Barangay Pajo, Daanbantayan, Cebu, last week. Police said that the three, identified as Baricro Magiyahay of Barangay Poblacion, Leo Andrino Rodrigo of Purok Mangga 2, and Randolf Rosell of Barangay Lanao, were stabbed and bludgeoned dead somewhere else before they were dumped in Barangay Pajo.
Investigators are eyeing drugs as the motive behind the killings.
It doesn’t matter what the motive is, even if the three were killed to prevent them from dealing drugs, the scourge of the modern day and the cause behind many crimes and senseless acts. The act of killing them and then leaving their bodies behind is even more dastardly then whatever crime those three may have committed.
It also says something about the killers of the three. When a perpetrator kills a victim, the perpetrator would normally do his best to make sure the body, usually the best piece of evidence against him, will never be found. Crime stories tell us they go to great lengths to hide them, whether they bury them in shallow graves, put them in weighted barrels them dump them out at sea, or place them in septic tanks, among other methods.
But this was not the case here. In this case the perpetrators were bold enough to just dump the bodies where they were sure to be found. It’s obvious they want to get a message across, although we aren’t sure what message they are trying to tell.
Dumping one body out in the open takes guts, but dumping three takes balls, or a certain confidence that the perpetrators won’t get caught, or that they have good protectors.
In a previous editorial three months ago about two salvaging incidents also in Cebu, we said we don’t want a return to the times when finding dead people in the vacant spaces of towns and cities were a commonplace. The police should do everything they can for the sake of the victims, and also to dissuade those who think they can just kill people then get rid of them like garbage.
