Two women vice presidents

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Ballescas - The Freeman

Many did not expect Carina to bring so much rains and floods. Neither did our people expect that Carina would transform into a super storm. Thank God, Carina is out of the country. Still, prayers are continuing for our country to be spared another typhoon.

Netizens shared videos and photos of the heavy floods that literally swallowed vehicles in the streets, garbage conspicuous in the rushing waters, sadly, many left homeless in crowded evacuation centers.

Amidst the sad news and visuals of the destructive impacts of Carina, this post circulated in social media brightened the darkened sky and horizon with hope.

“While Marcos Jr. remains absent from public eye and Sara DU30 flies to Germany, former Vice President Leni Robredo demonstrated a master class in disaster response yesterday during the #CarinaPH situation. In less than 5 hours, here’s how she swiftly handled the crisis:

• Robredo worked closely with local government units (LGUs) and other organizations to support rescue efforts;

• She promptly opened Angat Buhay emergency hotlines, providing rescue and immediate assistance;

• Robredo activated the Angat Buhay Volunteer Network (ABVN), mobilizing partners and volunteers to assist in relief efforts;

• At least seven (and counting) Angat Bayanihan partners were set up to provide hot meals and food packs to thousands of evacuees;

• She met with her NGO and other partners for coordination and situation briefings.

• Robredo reactivated Bayanihan E-Konsulta;

• She rallied volunteers to participate in relief operations;

• In partnership with the Tanging Yaman Foundation, Angat Buhay launched a donation drive;

• Angat Bayanihan partners continued to provide hot meals and relief assistance to evacuees;

“Walang public funds. Walang confidential funds. Her swift and effective response exemplifies strong leadership in disaster management.

“Imagine having her in a top government position! Mabilis!”

Imagine if she had not been cheated last elections, the highest government position--the presidency-- would have been hers!

The country would have had a very active, responsive, honest president, a genuine servant-leader especially for our poor and needy.

Across the sea, in the United States of America, incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris is now running for president after Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., the 46th and incumbent president of the United States stepped down as a presidential candidate prioritizing “democracy over his ambition”.

Harris has clearly stressed her vision to usher in “a future where no child has to grow up in poverty.”

Running on what she called “a people-powered campaign” and a “people-first” presidency, Harris rejects Trump’s” tax breaks to corporations and billionaires which make working families pay for it and strip away protections in the Affordable Care Act.

She told American voters “not to have these failed economic policies before and we’re not going back.”

Harris’ question for the voters: “Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?”

Harris added: “Donald Trump wants to take our country backward to a time before many of our fellow Americans had full freedoms and rights. We believe in a brighter future that makes room for all Americans, in a country that expands rights and access to prosperity beyond the wealthy.”

These interesting comments from women in our group chat:

“Kamala Harris is coming on her own, her moment in time. It’s destiny. Just a few months ago, very few paid attention when she visited the WPS!”

“And BBM telling her to enjoy our fine beaches, hahaha.”

“It’s a new time. Is America, are Christians, ready for this?”

“A Black-Asian woman President (whose father is a Jamaican American of Afro-Jamaican ancestry, her mother born in India)? And an advocate for women’s reproductive and other rights?”

“I am thrilled. Women actually have a chance here to be taken as equals and deserving. And this will ripple down forcefully across the world.”
